7th and final night in Tarifa, we decided to try La Burla based on Tripadvisor reviews. Nice location. Good food. But we'll never go back. Don't know what was going on with our waitress. Bill was 57.40€. We put 60€ on the tray. The tray was taken away by a colleague. We waited for the tray to be brought back with the change. The tray didn't come back. Our waitress eventually came back to our table holding a couple of coins between finger and thumb, saying in a confrontational aggressive manner "CAMBIO?" Both taken aback and a bit confused by what was playing out, my husband said "sí". But the waitress wouldn't put the coins on the table, just stood glaring at us, holding out her hand towards us, as though challenging us to actually take the coins from her grasp, which, eventually accepting the challenge, I did. The whole thing was really pretty awful. Why wasn't the change on a tray the same way the bill has arrived, and the same way every other restaurant in town operates? And why was she holding 3€ in her grasp and not the correct amount of 2.60€? Was is some weird attempt at embarrassing us into leaving a couple of euros tip that we would have left anyway? I still have no idea. I have never experienced anything like this before in any restaurant anywhere, ever. I'm still trying to work out what the hell was going on.
We were fully intending to leave the change, as we always do, even though the service wasn't great.(we had to ask 3 times for the bill, and waited over 30 minutes for it to arrive). But it was only a couple of euros, and it's standard procedure in Spain to just round up the bill. But standard procedure or not, it is the customer's choice to make, when the change is brought back to the table. So anyway, she ended up without any tip at all. Bizarre, distasteful and totally unnecessary behaviour. And unfortunately it pretty much ruined our experience at La Burla.

Read moreAfter finding another restaurant closed, I walked along the road facing the fishing port in Tarifa and discovered La Burla tapas bar and restaurant. However, as it was a bit windy to sit outside, even with a glass barrier for protection, I sat inside and asked the waiter if I could just order a large coffee.
I was delighted to find this place, and I felt quite relaxed while enjoying my coffee. The friendly waiter/bartender spoke some English, and when he saw that I wanted to use my iPad and telephone, he showed me the WiFi code posted on the wall behind the bar. I will be back in Tarifa in a few months and may eat here.
La Burla has an excellent location. I saw a notice stating that TripAdvisor has given the place a Certificate of Excellence based on customer satisfaction. I liked the ceiling light fixtures which are all from Morocco.
There is a bar/counter with high chairs and you can order drinks with tapas if you don't want a full meal. One of the waiters was an efficient young man from Italy and he provided excellent service. I highly recommend La Burla as a place to eat tapas and have some drinks at the bar, or to sample its menu for delicious food, whether Italian pastas or lasagna, or some other of the chef's...

We can’t stop thinking about this place. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with such genuine warmth that we instantly felt at home. The team at La Burla is something special—friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do.
We loved it so much, we came back a second time—and it was just as amazing. The seafood linguini? Hands down the best we’ve ever had. You could taste the quality of the ingredients in every bite—so fresh, so flavorful, just incredible. And the tapas? Each one was a little work of art, packed with creativity and bursting with taste.
Honestly, we think La Burla has the best food in Tarifa. The care they put into every dish really shines through.
The vibe was relaxed, cozy and a celebration of community and friendship. It was so much more than just a meal—it’s an experience you’ll remember.
