Restaurante Gran China — Restaurant in Torrevieja

This Chinese restaurant is the first one that we ate in, many years ago. The owners have become great friends. Following a major refurbishment last year it is now a very large, but very friendly establishment. There is the usual choice of three course menu of the day, del dia, from 6.99 Euros to sharing platters and a version of a lamb shank for 8.99 Euros. This takes some eating and you would have to be very hungry to finish it all. The refurbishment did not only almost double the size, but brought this right up to date, with a very classy interior, more in keeping with a restaurant costing many times the normal bill size, in fact you could be mistaken for thinking you are in a restaurant with Michelin stars. This is very much the place of choice if a nice quiet Chinese is the order of the day. Very busy in the summer months and opening is the same as most others in the area, 9.30 A.M. - 2P.M. and opening again at 5.30P.M. until 11.30 P.M.. Ok so firstly the food is lovely. And one of the few restaurants to have a menu del dia that's vegan and vegetarian. This is a step above the rest for Chinese restaurants in Spain. The decor is beautiful, the atmosphere is always good. HOWEVER... During quieter times the service is really good and feels like a well oiled machine. But when they are busy the service is and can be some of the worst I've experienced. If you catch them on a busy night you can be left waiting for 20 minutes before you even get a drink. And on 2 occasions now we have been treated terribly. The staff when busy here can be short.. rude and make you feel like an inconvenience. And on their quieter times out of season it's all smiles and 'how are you' and the service is great. So the honest review is... The food is wonderful and has been every time we have been. This is my favourite restaurant in our area. It represents excellent value for money, fabulous facilities including comfort and quality fittings and furniture. The service is great, friendly staff and very quick and attentive service. The menu is comprehensive but the attraction is the set menus starting at 7.90. We went for the 9.90 set menu which includes a starter, main course, half bottle of wine, coffee or brandy to finish and that doesn’t include the sangria and prawn crackers you get as you arrive. We had prawn cocktails to start followed by roast leg of pork with noodles and chips, we finished with a brandy and baileys. The whole meal was spectacular and the best value for money.
