This used to be an excellent restaurant for its indian cuisine quality. I don’t know what happened recently..
I have occassionally visited this place a few years back. It never disappointed to serve generous portions, well-spiced, with very good taste.
This year, I decided to come back for a few meals, and I was surprised with the drop in food quality. The ingredients used in the dishes do not feel fresh, and the meat parts are not chosen carefully as they used to. I got portions that were mostly bones rather than edible parts.
The prices are generally the same as always, slightly expensive, but it used to balance itself with the generous portions in the past. In my recent experiences I have found myself craving for more, as the portions appear to have much less quantity than needed to satisfy one’s appetite.
Waiters are attentive, friendly, and helpful to make choices on the menu. The personnel in the kitchen appear less friendly, glancing towards the customers in an intrusive manner. I felt uncomfortable under their gaze when going in/out or during payment.
In terms of hygiene, I visited a few times during covid-aware times and I regretted it. Cleaningness is totally absent on the outside dining area, and no disinfectants available on the table. You have to inquire personally for the table to be cleaned, only to be met with a half-dirty wet cloth that is practically less effective at cleaning the table than spreading around the germs. The inside is better, but still on below average hygienic standards.
I might come back after a few years to see if they have improved. But I prefer to avoid it for...
Read moreI have been a loyal customer of Chili Masala for years, and every time I return, I am reminded why this place holds such a special place in my heart. The food has a consistency and honesty that is rare to find. From the very first visit until now, the flavors have carried the same richness, balance, and soul that keep drawing me back.
The naan is always a highlight, soft, airy, and blistered just right in the tandoor. The rice comes beautifully fragrant, each grain perfectly cooked, with colorful accents that brighten both the dish and the mood. And then the curries, they tell stories. Each one layered with spices that unfold gradually, never rushed, never harsh, but comforting, deep, and warming. It’s not just a meal, it’s a memory, a journey into tradition and craft.
As someone who has dined here many times, I can confidently say that Chili Masala offers more than food, it offers connection. The service is friendly, sometimes unhurried, but that pace also allows you to enjoy the atmosphere and truly savor your meal. The space may be simple, but it reflects an authenticity that makes you feel at home.
Coming back again and again, I realize that Chili Masala is more than a restaurant to me, it is part of my own personal tradition. A place where taste, culture, and hospitality come together in a way that always leaves...
Read moreThis is probably the best Indian restaurant around Stockholm. For the simple reason that in quality cooking there are no shortcuts. Sadly, many Indian restaurants in town don’t understand this. They rely on the fact most Swedes’ haven’t been to India and can’t really tell the difference between average and really good Indian cooking. So many of these establishments use the same base curry gravy for all their dishes.
Tony, who opened Chili Masala in the suburban neighborhood of Hagalund, knows that good food speaks for itself and will advertise by word of mouth. Hailing from Punjab in present day Pakistan, he became fascinated with food from an early age. The Punjabi kitchen, like in many parts of India, is practiced in street stalls where anyone who is interested can watch and learn.
So who gave away the secret where to find some great, possibly the best, Indian food around town? An Indian taxi driver, of course. -“That’s where the embassy people go for their food”. This is usually a good sign.
