Disappointing Dining Experience Marred by Owner’s Cheap Tactics

Last night’s dinner at Safran was a frustrating and utterly disappointing ordeal, thanks to the owner’s blatant cost-cutting antics that prioritized profit over customer comfort. From the moment we arrived, the experience went downhill.

Upon entering, we were eager to dine indoors, but the owner insisted—almost aggressively—that we sit outside. His reasoning? To “save electricity.” This was absurd, as the indoor area was already lit and half-empty. It felt like a cheap ploy to cut costs at our expense. The outdoor seating was a nightmare: dimly lit with no proper lighting, leaving us squinting at our menus, and swarmed by mosquitoes that made eating unbearable. No repellent or citronella candles were offered, just a shrug when we complained.

The food itself was mediocre at best—overpriced for the quality—but the real frustration came at the end. During payment, the owner tried to pull a fast one with the currency conversion, presenting a confusing exchange rate that inflated the bill. It took several minutes of back-and-forth to get him to process the payment in the local currency, and even then, he acted as if we were inconveniencing him. This shady tactic left a sour taste.

The final straw was when we asked for a simple drinking water refill for our reusable bottle. Instead of a courteous gesture, the owner had the audacity to demand 10 CHF for a liter of tap water. This was beyond stingy—it was outright exploitative. We left feeling cheated and disrespected.

Safran could have been a pleasant evening out, but the owner’s penny-pinching behavior—insisting on outdoor seating, dodging fair payment practices, and charging exorbitantly for basic water—ruined any chance of enjoyment. I won’t be returning, and I’d advise others to steer clear unless you enjoy being nickel-and-dimed...

à la carte bestellt, Tagesmenü erhalten, aber der volle Preis wurde berechnet

Ich hatte eine sehr unangenehme Erfahrung in diesem Restaurant. Während dem Mittag scheint es nur Tagesmenüs im Angebot zu haben, während à la carte nicht möglich ist. Ich wollte Butter Chicken bestellen, während auf dem Tagesmenü Chicken Korma als Geflügelgericht im Angebot war (Tagesmenü ca. CHF15). Mir wurde das Tagesmenü Chicken Korma serviert, was sonst 15 Franken kostet, verrechnet wurde mir aber Butter Chicken was à la carte ca. 30 Franken kostet. Die zwei Gerichte sind leicht voneinander zu unterscheiden. Das Gericht Butter Chicken bildet eine Art Curry mit Hähnchenfleisch und einer gewürzten Tomaten-Butter-Sauce, während Korma mit Joghurt, Sahne, Nuss- und Samenpasten oder Kokosmilch zubereitet wird. In seiner eigenen Speisekarte wird dies so beschrieben. Das Korma an sich war gut und ich habe es gerne aufgegessen, aber mir wurde ein anderes Gericht verrechnet mit dem doppelten Aufpreis. Während dem Essen kamen verschiedene Kunden, die Take-Away bestellt haben und den Besitzer gefragt haben ob er am Abend wieder jeweils geöffnet hat, weil sie gerne wieder à la carte essen wollen. Dies impliziert, dass am Mittag jeweils nur die verschiedenen Tagesmenüs serviert werden und eine Bestellung à la carte nicht möglich ist. Als ich den Besitzer damit konfrontiert habe, beharrte er darauf, dass dies seine Art ist Butter Chicken zu zubereiten. Es ist als ob man zum Italiener gehen möchte, eine Carbonara bestellt, aber dann eine Bolognese bekommt und dir der Koch weissmachen will, dass dies seine Art von einer Carbonara ist. Der Besitzer hat vorsätzlich betrügerisch gehandelt, in der Annahme, dass der Kunde als Europäer keine Ahnung von indischem Essen hat und dass die Masche so funktioniert. My experience is a very different and special , we were crossing Switzerland and driving towards France and it was quite late in the evening and weee craving for some good food , when we reached this place we got to know that the kitchen in closed but realising that we weee tourist and with kids Mr Saleem was very kind to make us feel comfortable and take our order , we are extremely thankful to him . The cherry on the top - the food was awesome . I totally recommend this place and next time when I visit Switzerland I will make sure I will visit this place . Highly...
