Kebap Haus Höngg Take Away — Restaurant in Zurich

By far the best kebab house in Zurich.

I have been coming here for decades, and every single person I have brought has ended up taking detours through the city just to come back for another one.

A little guide for anyone who is not yet fluent in the language of good kebab: The bread, whether it is the pocket bread for Döner or the flatbread for Dürüm, is freshly made and baked right in front of you. The meat is real layered meat. That is the real deal.

At 999 out of 1000 kebab houses, the bread is not fresh, and the meat is not layered. It is ground, pressed, and often held together with other things than meat.

Layered meat requires real quality, otherwise it becomes chewy and unpleasant. Ground meat avoids that by being mashed into a uniform softness, but that comes at the cost of taste and texture.

To add some perspective: a Döner with a drink costs 14.50 CHF. In the city, at many bad kebab houses, you pay around 21 CHF for the same meal. They put more money into better ingredients and still charge less, while others charge more and invest less.

As a rule of thumb: If the bread is not freshly baked, and the meat is not layered, you can be sure that the place cares more about profit than about the product.

Absolute favorite and the best kebab place in Zurich. I have tried them all and this wins every time. 🥙

Staff is hardworking, fast and very nice. They make the fladenbrot/wrap fresh when you order or you can have a 'Brottasche' which is a pita bread cut open and stuffed with all the ingredients which is also phenomenal.

Not a large place but you can always find a seat. Always busy because it is popular, they work very quickly and you won’t have to wait long. Everything is fresh and taste great.

Highly recommend the Poulet/chicken kebab. Marinated chicken breast grilled on the flat top with fresh veggies mixed in.

Enttäuschender Besuch im Dönerladen

Leider war mein Besuch in diesem Dönerladen alles andere als angenehm. Der Service ließ stark zu wünschen übrig: Die Mitarbeiter schienen desinteressiert und unfreundlich. Statt einer einladenden Atmosphäre herrschte eher das Gefühl, unerwünscht zu sein.

Besonders enttäuschend war, dass Fragen zu den Zutaten oder Optionen ungeduldig und schnippisch beantwortet wurden. Es schien, als wären die Mitarbeiter mehr damit beschäftigt, ihre eigenen Gespräche zu führen, als sich um die Kunden zu kümmern. Auch die Wartezeit war viel länger, als es bei der überschaubaren Kundenzahl zu erwarten gewesen wäre. Eine Entschuldigung oder Erklärung blieb aus.

Der Döner selbst war ebenfalls enttäuschend: Das Fladenbrot wirkte, als wäre der Teig nicht richtig durchgebacken, was den Genuss erheblich beeinträchtigt hat. Das Fleisch war sparsam portioniert und schien nicht frisch – es hatte einen faden Geschmack und fühlte sich an, als hätte es schon länger gelegen. Insgesamt war die Qualität des Essens weit unter den Erwartungen.

Alles in allem hat sowohl der schlechte Service als auch das mangelhafte Essen das gesamte Erlebnis negativ geprägt. Ich würde diesen Laden nicht weiterempfehlen – es gibt definitiv bessere Alternativen in...
