One of the most memorable aspects of my recent trip to Thailand was a visit to The Chiangmai cream tea house in Mae Raem, which both in its exterior appearance, and interior decor, would not have been out of place in a quaint English village. Indeed, one almost expected to find the genteel Miss Marple of the fictional St Mary Mead sitting at the next table consuming authentic home made scones with lashings of whipped cream and jam, along with a refreshing pot of Earl Grey tea as she mentally runs through her list of suspects for the recent murder at the vicarage.
The owner, the ebullient Riam Merton, not only speaks excellent English, but clearly has a first hand insight into English culture and cuisine. Whilst I only had room for scones and a selection of mouth watering cakes, there was plenty more traditional British fare on offer, including a traditional breakfast, complete with sausages bacon toast and baked beans. These was also an impressive selection of home made ice cream.
