Salungkham — Restaurant in Chiang Rai Province

I thought the food here was really good. I in particular recommend the green chili nam prik plate. They must be known for this dish as they sell take away containers of the roasted chilis. I couldn't take a picture as it was too popular at our table. The order comes with a nice assorted veggie plate too. Soaking if veggies, a great accompanying herb garnish comes with the beef larb, make sure to try all the various leafy herbs as they compliment the larb and cuts trig the richness. We had a set menu and did not look at the descriptions, so a heads up the beef larb contains innards like liver and kidney. I liked it and the heavy spiced dish can take the mineral and rich organ meat, but it can be a surprise. The herbs do a nice job to balance the dish. I also loved the chicken and bamboo soup. The other signature dish the have available for take away is a beef curry I think in the style of massaman but it was a bit sweet for my taste. Let me start off this review by saying I grew up in Maesai/Chiang Rai, however, I left the country and have been living overseas for 20+ years.

I made such a horrible mistake going to this place. Reviews weren’t bad so I thought I’d give it a try. Hung Le pork was SO sweet it could be a dessert. Northern sausage was super dry. Stir fried wood ear mushrooms was the only edible plate on our table. The food came out fast but felt like it wasn’t fresh… On top of the food being 0/10 our waiter also sat super close and stared at us the entire meal without refilling the water or asking if we needed anything else.
