Recommend sitting indoors as there are mosquitoes and flies around at night.
Ordered the two Michelin guide recommended dishes - fried sand fish and sour soup but did not enjoy either. The fried sand fish came with fried garlic chilli crisps which was amazing but didn’t go well with the fried fish. Combined, they were too dry and oily. I thought the choice of fish used was also a mistake. This dish was reminiscent of the fried shisamo fish common in Japanese cuisine. Unlike the shisamo, the sand fish used has hardier bones and it felt a little too dangerous to chew through them and swallow. The size of the fish used was also not consistent. The smaller ones were great, but the larger ones had even bigger and hardier bones which made them impossible to enjoy. We spent some time trying to debone them.
The hot and sour soup was very well reviewed so it was to our surprise that we didn’t like it, especially because we enjoy spicy and sour foods. The fish used in this dish had the skin on and while the meat remained tender, it tasted too fishy. The skin also had some scales left on it. More time should be spent on preparing the fish if they were going to leave the skin on.
Our favourite dish was also the cheapest - Liang leaves with egg. Simple and well balanced. The shrimp chips used with this dish were a great choice - crisp and not too salty. Highly recommend this.

If you’re in Khaoyai and craving authentic Thai Southern cuisine, YungKhaow Khaoyai is the place to be. During our visit, we enjoyed a variety of dishes that showcased the rich flavors of Southern Thailand.
First up was the คั่วกลิ้งไก่ (Southern Thai dry curry with minced chicken). The flavors were intense and aromatic, making it an instant favorite. The แกงเหลืองปลากะพง (Southern Thai Spicy Sour Yellow Curry with sea bass) was equally impressive. The tangy and spicy notes were perfectly balanced, making every spoonful delightful.
To help manage the spiciness, we had ใบเหลียงผัดไข่ (Stir-fried Malindjo Leaves with Egg). This dish was a perfect accompaniment, providing a soothing contrast to the spicier dishes. Lastly, the ปลากุเลาทอดขมิ้น (Fried turmeric fish) was a highlight – super crispy with a wonderful aroma from the turmeric.
The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated in a traditional wooden Thai style, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. There are both indoor and outdoor seating options, and we found the toilets to be clean. The ample parking space and availability of high chairs for babies make it a family-friendly destination.
