Saengchan Restaurant Phayao — Restaurant in Wiang Subdistrict

Very good Thai food, prepared less spicy upon request (in Thai language). Extensive menu with English language and many pictures - a good place to try various Thai dishes. And the cook doesn't skimp on vegetables nor seafood. Be careful, sometimes one menu item explains two dishes in one block and the young, serious waiters try hard, but speak no English whatsoever (even if it appears so). Draft Singha beer available, happily no beer girl system. The live music I would call acoustic pop. The (up to) five piece house band is smooth and professional, but in no way exciting or spicy. It's rather dinner music and no one will get up and dance around the table. The unusual thing is a saxophone player in that house band. Clean and spacious restrooms. Outdoor seating can get cold and windy in late December. (A relatively similar alternative in the Phayao lakeside tourist district would be the Slum Bar also with live music and outdoor seating (and not slummy). The Slum Bar is geared towards younger people, the live music seems to be more rocky and trendy. Beer girls, chairs without back rest. Slum Bar's menu has no pictures and no English (even if they call themselves "Slum Bar" in big red English letters). Several standard Thai dishes that I asked for were not on the menu. First they kept topping up our glasses of water- turns out they wanted to get to opening the second bottle of water which they charged us 30 baht each for (and we didn’t even know it wasn’t free)

Then they tried to charge 90 baht for a Thai omelette which was labeled as 10 baht in the menu

I went here only for a couple of sodas but when I saw the food they brought in to the other tables and looked at their absolutely huge menu card I knew this is place I have to come back and eat at the next time I visit Phayao.
