Surprising San Francisco Eats

On our way to San Francisco we decided to stop by via Yelp finds for fish n' chips. The pictures on Yelp looked so inviting! We arrived with big appetites and decided to order their Fish n' chips combo which included shrimp and upgraded our fries to the garlic fries. Our daughter ordered their calamari and we topped it off with a regular bowl of their clam chowder. Couple of iced teas to wash it down. Place was clean (outdoors only option for it's a food truck type of service) service was a walk up window, however effective and organized. The food was really good for a spot just outside the Fisherman's Warf. Our daughter enjoyed her calamari which was fresh and crispy just like the Fish n' chips combo. They offer dipping sauces like shrimp cocktail, their own blend of cream of tartar, homemade sauce for their calamari which was a mayonnaise based sauce, and ketchup. All in all it was a pleasant experience.

I finally tried Codmother Fish and Chips while on one of my rounds of Fisherman's Wharf. It is a food truck about 2 blocks from the wharf so it's in the heart of the touristy area of SF. Ordering was pretty straightforward walk up to the window, place order, pay, then wait for order number to be called and finally pickup. Next you can eat at one of the few shared tables in front or take your food to-go. I decided to get the simple fish & chips ($10.99) to-go and was on my way in 10 minutes. I got 2 big pieces of fried fish over a handful of chips. The fried fish has a thick dense batter as an outer cover with an air pocket separating the two. This is very different from other fried fish which has the batter properly coated all over. The fish seemed to have been in the fryer a tad longer than what would be the correct frying time, still the batter did not have a nice crunch but felt lumpy instead. The fish inside was almost lost with the batter stealing the limelight and not in a nice kind of way. The fries also could have been a lot crispier. They felt too soggy and limp. All things considered the fish and chips were very average. Price wise it was a tad less than what you would pay at other touristy fish places on the Wharf. I guess that shows up in the quality of the serving. Considering the high ratings of this place, it could be that I just come on an off day, but what I got deserves an A-OK grade.

One of the best I have had! They do not have tartar sauce though. My partner's fish was not as good, mostly batter and over cooked fish. One of the staff asked how the meal was and we told her. Her attitude was "oh well we have a new cook". I would have given 5 stars, but don't really like it when I am asked how the meal was and it's a rhetorical question. Excellent fish and chips. 1 piece is probably enough for each person. Wife had the shrimp and she also enjoyed hers. We got the stinky fries as well which were on point. Great service here! All the reviews were right. Big portions with big flavors! Got the combo (fish/shrimp) for me and my husband along with a side of garlic fries! It was the perfect amount of food for us. Don't forget to try their baja sauce. It's the perfect accompaniment to the fries and fish. The fish was fresh and the batter was crispy.

We ate here on the first day, as we were hungry. However, had we been aware of the Bourdin bakery, 5min walk from the codmother, we'd have gone there. We later visited Bourdin, and the chowder in the bread bowl was the bomb 💣 Anyhow. Given it was a Popular food truck around Fisherman's wharf, with nice little seating area, figured we'd check it out. Food is a little bit pricey for what you get, but that's probably a by product of being in the tourist trap area. On to the food, chips were great, was expecting the fish to be a little bigger, but overall wasn't bad. Tacos were standard. As mentioned above, consider checking out Bourdin bakery 5min walk from the codmother, or if your looking for fancy, check out Abaca restaurant in the Kimpton hotel, that food is next level!
