We went to the "famous" fish fry and were disappointed to say the least. We had also eaten at a couple of sit down restaurants afterwards and weren't impressed either, especially for the prices being charged.
Our food experience outlook was saved, on the second to last day of our stay in TCI, when we found a restaurant right by Sapodilla Beach. Literally a 3 minute drive or a 8 minute walk from there. It was a Cuban restaurant, Que Bola Little Havana, that had just opened up 4 months ago. The owners are a husband and wife team, Pedro and Milly. They are so welcoming and very approachable. In fact we talked to them quite a bit throughout our visits.
Now on to the food. Let me preface this by saying my wife loves fried whole fish and ordes it whenever we visit an island, especially in the Caribbean. So she's somewhat of an expert on the matter. She had ordered fried snapper at two other restaurants prior to this one and they were the worst she's ever had. No flavor whatsoever, not even basic salt and the skin was not really fried as she was accustomed to throughout the Caribbean.
While she was nervous to order fried fish for a third time, she did and it did not disappoint! Her Fried Whole Fish was delicious, packed with flavor and a had beautiful crust; crunchy on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. I ordered Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef) and it was tasty as well. Both dishes came with tostones (fried plantains), rice, beans and salad. They didn't really have any desserts other than rice pudding so we decided to forgo that, but then Milly informed us that they would have freshly made Tres Leches the next day.
Given that we had a great experience the day prior and with the added enticement of one of my favorite desserts, we went again the next day. My wife ordered the fried whole fish again and experienced the same on point flavor again. This time around I ordered a Cuban Sandwich and it was delicious. We finished things off with Tres Leches for dessert, so good! One piece was actually big enough for two people, so we took our second order to go.
I definitely recommend anyone looking for Cuban food, food full of flavor and a friendly environment to check this place out. Especially after a day at...
Read moreHands down some of the best food, coffee on the island. If your in grace bay, come out here. If your in chalk come here. Worth every penny spent. Service was amazing. Came here first thing in the morning when they opened at 10. The lady came out from the back and greeted us. Super friendly and nice. Doesn’t look to be much staff other than her and cook in the back. Interior is super clean, smells clean, chique. Beautiful nice decorations inside and out. Has balcony area to eat. Not the greatest views because of the area but who needs that when you got a cool breeze and sun shining. Was one of the only places in Chalk sound that provides coffee, latte, ice coffee, ice latte, cafe. Came in and had a Cuban coffee and it was amazing. Good flavor. Good taste. Nice and strong. With our cup of Cuban coffee we got a tiny small cinnamon roll dessert. Nice touch! Ended up ordering some food while we were there as well. Had the Cuban Croquette Havana Basket (Conch), ( they have pork, chicken, beef as well) Cuban Sandwhich with fries Ropa vieja (Stewed beef, with black beans, rice and fried plantains)
Everything was good. Nice flavor. Not greasy. Authentic taste. Favorite and must try is the Havana basket which is fried plantains which are shaped into small bowl bites filled with some your choice of protein and savor sauce. Prices were very fair and not over priced like most places. 2 cups of coffee, two appetizers and 2 entrees and water which was plenty for two people. Walked away full. Come visit and support this local...
Read moreMy favorite food on the entire island.
I've been coming to Turks and Caicos for years now and the food has been pretty standard for what you'd expect for island cuisine. This year I discovered this gem and my mouth salivates just talking about it.
The Vieja roja was very tender shredded beef with an immense amount of flavor. The whole fish (fried) is one of the only places I've ever had a fried fish that was seasoned So WELL!! I can't stress this enough. The Cuban sandwich was also incredibly delicious and the flavors are distinct and the notes hit your taste buds in harmony.
This place is so clean. You can taste how clean and fresh the food is. They're not reusing old fryer oil, that's something that you can easily taste. The food is very clearly made with love and passion.
Please don't ever take your foot off the gas and keep taking pride in such great food. I will be visiting every time I'm on the island....
