This was our first time back to the Black Horse since it was re-opened under new management. We parked for free at the back of this establishment and then walked through to be warmly greeted and seated in the back in what appears to be a converted barn.
The young man who served us was exemplary. He was polite, friendly and patient as we settled down and decided on our order. I took his advice and went for the Harvey's bitter. In the end I settled on whitebait for my first course and fish and chips for the main dish. They don't do a children's menu but our waiter offered our nine year old a smaller portion of the adults spaghetti bolognese and a free dessert. I appreciated the flexibility here. My mother had a delicious prawn and crawfish salad followed by fish pie. My father went for the whitebait and the fish pie.
To be honest, while the service was great we were a little disappointed by the modest sizes of the main courses given the less than modest prices asked for. I spent 128,30 pounds for the four of us which included an automatic 12.5% service charge. We thought that was steep for what we had.
Oh, and please be aware that the sound proofing in the barn like area in the back where we sat isn't up to much. As the restaurant filled with happy customers the noise of people, particularly groups of ladies, shouting over each other became very irritating. Pity as this also spoiled our...
Read moreMy husband and I visited Saturday evening for a meal with my Dad and his partner. We were quite excited to try this pub since its refurb as we had popped in for a drink a few weeks before and liked the atmosphere. Sadly we were disappointed! Whilst the service was good I did feel âstood overâ by the waiting staff whilst eating. We found the menu very limited and overpriced for the quality of the dishes we received. I had the fish & chips which was described as beer battered, I would expect this to be a light crispy batter, instead it was flat and tasteless, the crushed peas were awful unsure what they were seasoned with but had a horrible taste. My husband and Father had steak which was ok but did not live up to the price tag, also my husband did not get the pepper corn sauce he ordered, to be fair the servers brought some over but was watery and tasteless. My Fatherâs partner had the fish pie which she said she enjoyed. Half way through the meal the live singer started which I have to say was very good however was very load and at times we found it hard to hear each other talk. Overall, disappointing, overpriced with a very limited menu. Sadly will not...
Read moreGood points; excellent shower except nowhere to put shampoo etc, comfortable bed. Bad points; Our room ' Wild rose' was above the kitchen so almost constant noise from extractor fan,no full length mirror, unusable kettle due to really short flex, no water or biscuits in room.Expensive for a pub. The pub itself is bland hard to believe its part of the Baillifscourt group. We decided to eat in the bar as we had our dog with us and the tables in the restaurant are very close together, standing at the bar we ordered a bottle of wine ( very nice) and asked for 2 menus,we had to pay for the wine immediately, having chosen our food we had to order at the bar and again pay immediately, we had to collect our cutlery no napkins supplied, I had a pie which was good my wife had fish and chips, chips were good..fish was not ,poor quality and very little batter,we ordered desert again had to pay immediately. Your policy of making us pay upfront every time even though we were staying the night and you already had our card details having charged us before we had arrived made us feel like fare...
