This has been my local pub for years. I'm not a big beer drinker but I do enjoy going out to eat. I used to eat here 2/3 times a week 20yrs ago. But due to the owner declaring the food that can be sold must come from one of his own producing company this now means that only PING food is served. (microwaved) Put bluntly I ain't eating that muck. This has resulted in god knows how many managers and local people not frequenting the pub like it used to be. I personally like the beer having drunk it for nearly 50yrs. The pub left alone by the breweries upper management and allowed to sell good home cooked food would be one of the best in Barnsley. I believe Sunday lunch is home cooked but I haven't tried this so I cannot comment. But for good drink at very reasonable prices it can't be beaten. Well...
Read moreFour of us booked in for a Saturday night meal, when we got there the car park was empty, (bad sign) once inside we were surprised to find we were the only ones there apart from two local guys in the taproom. The meal was fine, and the girl serving was fine, but apparently the Brewery that own it, (Sam Smiths) don't allow mobile phones, no background music, or tvs etc, so we sat there for two and a half hours and not another soul came in, so no atmosphere at all, we used to go there 30 years ago and you had to book well in advance to get a table. Read moreA Samuel Smiths boozer so a perfect selection of ale on the pumps. Traditional Sunday Roast was fantastic. Not faultless (I love my greens super green) but just awesome generally. Wish I'd gone for a small portion as it nearly killed me. Superb value. Lovely proper Yorkshire puddings and desserts to die for. Lovely friendly and helpful staff too. Nice and peaceful atmosphere in at least three well furnished and cosy rooms. I liked it so much I'm considering making the slightly long haul run from Nottingham to sample the Sunday lunch menu...
