Dined in for a Haddock fish n chips meal accompanied by a coke zero. You get an option of a side either mushy peas or curry sauce. Heinz tartar sauce is on offer and not charged for. All in spent about £15, but I wouldn't say it was all totally worth it.
Onto the review now, I got the haddock based on multiple reviews by food critics. The fish was 10/10. The portion size is huge. The taste of the fish with skin on coated with the crispy and airy batter that was less greasy, it was just about perfect. I honestly would've loved some authentic gherkin bits tartar sauce than the cheap heinz version that did no justice to the fillet.
The staff was really sweet but somehow don't understand how chips are made. The first time they were cold and soft, second time they were warm but again soft and felt microwaved. Third time they claimed it was fresh but severely undercooked, neither crispy nor cooked, ridiculous. Chips are meant to be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside which can either be achieved by a 25min oven bake at 180 or a double deep frying at low and then high temp. I was ashamed to send my order back the third time so I just took it out and bought it home where I'm gonna cook it well and have. Honestly this place gets 3 stars because my meal was ruined due to just the chips experience. The curry sauce wasn't of any use either. Curry and chips are meant to be a match made in heaven and this place doesn't do justice to it at all.
I don't know how this is #1 based on TripAdvisor, I'd definitely not recommend them. Even If I would, I'd suggest go get the fillet and get a takeout on them chips instead of...
Read moreVisiting here had been on the cards for a long time. My fellow foodie mate, however, seems to be scared of driving further than his bathroom these days so we never seem to make it over there. Anyhoo, I was in town and had time to kill and a daysaver so it was time to find out what it was all about. Rated highly by Graham Young of the Mail, the takeaway section was mobbed the whole time I was there. I opted to sit in and try the restaurant side. It is pretty small but well enough laid out to accomodate quite a few folk. And despite the old school blue and yellow sign outside it is very well appointed inside. On my visit they had a large party due but enough time to serve me and some others. On to the food. Naturally I ordered fish and chips. Your chips come in a separate bowl and although sufficient for me that night you don't get a mahoosive amount. They are however spankingly good. The fish too was a generous portion, fresh and delicious. The batter was crispy though just a touch too thick and tastes somewhat of the oil. Not that we are meant to eat the batter! Sauce does not come in bottles or squeezy dispensers but in sachets. A wedge of lemon is provided and of a proper size too so sauce shouldn't be required! Staff were friendly and not intrusive, and are uniformed. All in all it was well worth the visit and I shall...
Read moreTried the place after seeing / hearing reviews. Tried the restaurant, which was pretty decently set out, basic tables / chairs but was clean. I arrived, was asked to take a seat and a waitress came and took my order. Only 3 other people in there, so not too busy. Food arrived within 10 mins and fish looked lovely, freshly cooked but a bit small. Chip accompanied in a small bowl, again smaller portion than I was expecting. Accompanied with a small serving of curry sauce, which tasted ok. Ordered a can of pop to wash it down. Fish was lovely, nice crisp batter but quickly disappeared and along with small serving of chips, left me a little underwhelmed and half empty. Came to the bill ... over £16!!!! Fish n chips (curry sauce) were £14.40 ... and £1.80 for a can of pop!!! So food pretty decent but both Fish and chips too small, curry was quite tasty, service and layout were good but those prices were too expensive ... appreciate they are a business and need to make a profit but by contrast, my local (and no1) Fish n chip place charged just over £10 for a large fish and regular chips ... and it is ALWAYS on...
