Minworth Club & Lodge — Restaurant in Birmingham

Spent £250 to hire the function room for my 30th birthday party. When I came to decorate at around 4pm, the room didn't seem clean. There was some leftover confetti on some chairs, some tables were sticky and there an egg shell on floor. Since I'd been in to look at the room and pay a deposit, all the lights had been ripped out from the walls so there was just wires hanging out which didn't look great. Asked someone behind the bar if I could use command strips - was told no, but blu tack was fine and the lady asked if we had any. Spent ages decorating (in the meantime several staff walking through saying hello). As we were almost finished a member of staff (possibly the manager) stormed in and spoke to us appallingly! Raised her voice about the fact we had stuck stuff to the wall as they'd spent £8k on redecorating and NOTHING being allowed on the wall. I told her I had checked with someone and she just cut me off saying NO. NO. I had to repeat myself and she asked who said that because 'nobody would have said that' I described what the lady before looked like, and she said nobody looked like that that worked here. It was only another member of staff that pointed out it sounded like the chef. The chef from before came and apologised later on, but not the person who spoke to us like rubbish. We had to take down our decorations which made the room not look great as it was essentially bare with wires hanging out the wall. However, I was much more annoyed by the manner in which we were spoken to, I have never been spoken to by staff anywhere like that before, and was made worse by the fact we had done absolutely nothing wrong as I'd checked about the blu tack. I was told when paying my deposit, and again, over the phone by someone else a couple of days before the party that although the bar shuts at 12, we had until 1am to finish drinks and leave. However on the night this was not the case. We were not warned (or at least I wasn't) but a bit after 12 staff came through, again speaking to people like rubbish, really very rude and telling us to get out. Of course people weren't ready so there was confusion, people trying to finish drinks/conversations, order taxis and collect stuff. The same lady who spoke to us like rubbish before, did so again. I understand it's frustrating getting drunk people to leave, but there was no need for the hostility! People were understandingly annoyed, which was caused by being suddenly told to leave, earlier than what I was previously informed of. Many different people have spoken to me today in shock of the treatment by staff, including family members who were physically pushed. My brother in law was informed by a member of staff that the reason we had plastic cups was because they were "on the sesh" last night with an event or lock in, until around 6am. For some reason a bundle of jackets was chucked out the back by the toilets. I believe this was by staff as nobody I spoke to had done this. I called about this today as people are missing stuff and again was spoken to rudely, and was told it didn't happen and they'd check CCTV but didn't have anything. So I don't know for certain it was staff but I don't know why anyone at the party would have done that. Overall, I'm in shock at how rude staff were before the event and at the end which sadly marred the whole night. EDIT: Just spoke to my Mom who said one 'bouncer' threatened to smash my friends face in. Disgusting! Another for some reason came up to my Dad and said something along the lines of - I can guarantee I earn more money in one night than you do in a month! And kept saying it? I use the word bouncer lightly, as they were staff with jackets on that said security. They didnt have any other sort of uniform on, nor did they have a badge on. Awful place to use for a function. We were told that someone would be on the bar to serve us drinks for a baby shower held for me. After asking about tea and coffee which we were told there would be they gave us a kettle, tea bags and sugar, finally within 20 minutes we found a member of staff to provide mugs, milk and spoons.

We asked about being served drinks and were told a member of staff was late and when they arrived we would. For the 4 hours we were there we had no bar staff to serve us at all and were told to walk to the other bar. They somehow had no soft drinks on tap only cans of fizzy drinks, they also had no Coca Cola and the cans were £1.50 each. Everytime we walked to the other bar to get drinks we had to wait for anywhere between 5 and 25 minutes for someone to show up on the bar. On one occasions with a queue from my guests a bar staff member came to the bar looked at the queue and walked away. The glasses were all dirty and no ice offered.

The actual reason for the lack of service was they had a bigger "more important" event on that required all 4 of the bar staff/events manager while the other 2 bars had no staff. The events manager spoke to us briefly for about 5 minutes and spent the rest of the time on the other function being held. We payed for the Gold buffet for 20 people and barely recieved the silver buffet contents poorly thrown onto some plastic trays and cheap paper plates (After agreeing on glass plates). The food was definitely not for 20 people and not worth even a fraction of the price payed (cake selection for 20 people included 5 mini cupcakes and about 15 other inch long cakes). Very poor food overall.

The room was far too hot and windows were not allowed to be opened, no air conditioning and when you are outside it stinks of the sewage plant. The room hadn't been cleaned at all after the event before (dirty table, confetti on the carpet and bits of rubbish on the floor).

All this was after a nightmare trying to book involving calling up 4 times and being fobbed off, leaving our number in person with the manager and still not receiving communication. We phoned up again and finally got a hold off the events manager who told us to come in and pay.

Despite the room being free to hire, and only paying for food and drinks, it still wasn't worth the money. Better value to go to a pub and ask for a...

I recently booked Minworth Club & Lodge as the venue for my partners surprise 30th birthday. My main contact was Sue, who is really, really friendly, really helpful and made things as stress free as possible for me.

I booked a package for the function room, small buffet and DJ included, which was reasonably priced. I was also able to book a nice double room for £45.00.

The room was ready a little earlier than originally thought it would be so that was great, we moved a few tables and did all our own decorations.

I cannot fault Sue, or the Minworth Social Club at all, food was lovely, staff were friendly and the room itself was a great size.

---- The below is purely a review and a complaint about the DJ. I would STRONGLY recommend sorting your own DJ. -----Unfortunately the DJ was late - so, our guests were sat for half an hour in silence, and half an hour later when everyone else had arrived, myself and my partner walked into his surprise party without any music, which I was really disappointed about, he's a party person, always dancing, and was a shame there was no music or lighting etc. I spent weeks on a playlist, including many songs with important memories - (I did a memory lane sort of theme), but I noticed a large portion of the songs were not played at all. I had created a simple one page document and specified that around 5 or 6 children's songs were played early on in the night, but this was completely ignored - I only heard one song. The DJ's played a bunch of songs I had never heard of before and were certainly not on my playlist so I was very disappointed by that. Sue was apologetic and told the DJ's to stay later to compensate, which was very nice, but I did not feel this was her fault (plus all guests were told party finished at 12, so everyone started leaving around then. I would have liked an apology off the DJ.

Overall, the night was FANTASTIC and I would definitely book again, but will definitely not use the same DJ's. They ruined it for me, but in fairness no one else noticed what songs were missed etc.
