Sokrates Greek Taverna (Horwich) — Restaurant in Bolton

It goes to show how great my time was here, in that I forgot to take as many photos as I would've liked as I was so distracted by how good a time I was having.

I have wanted to eat in Sokrates for a long time as my wife has eaten here a few times and couldn't recommend it enough... and now neither can I!

I love Greece, I adore it in fact. The notion that I can go to this lovely little restaurant in the heart of Horwich and get my Greek fix whilst I'm trapped in the confines of the North of England is a real blessing.

The atmosphere and the ambiance of the place is like being in a real Greek taverna with beautiful blue and white walls, lovely string lights across the ceiling and other touches and trinkets straight out of Greece. They even play authentic music.

The service was absolutely lovely. Very polite and smiley and informative. My squad of four was eating the meze, and they explained every dish to us as it was brought out. We even got extras.

And then the food itself. The meze was incredible. No over exaggeration here, the calamari was the best I've ever eaten; and the lemon chicken wings right up there with some of the best wings I've ever eaten. And everything else on top of that was absolutely delicious and we were completely full by the time we had finished. Should add that we also finished with a Greek yoghurt cheesecake too which was a nice light way to cleanse the pallet before leaving.

Sokrates is not a cheap place, and nor should it be. The food was perfectly fairly priced for what we ate, and we left full and satisfied. I will absolutely be going again in the future and I will be eating the meze again and taking...

I can't believe I have not reviewed this place before as we have been going for over 12 years..that say's it all. Panos, Linda and the other staff are fantastic, nothing is too much trouble. They make you feel like family and as the place has a homely feel as you would expect from a Greek tavern you don't want your waitress's to be stuck up (disappointed in seeing a really negative review earlier). Panos the owner/chef often pops out for a little chat which is lovely. Our girls love the place, the food, everything about it. Linda and Panos know us well now and I cannot speak too highly of them. Horwich is lucky to have such a restaurant. We often order the Meze but the staff and Panos can tweak it if you ask. The cheesecake is incredible...a must try. We often ask to take a few slices home as our other daughter is at Uni and doesn't want to miss out. It's a great place to go for a romantic night for 2 but for me it's a great place to go with your family, the larger the better. It is after all a Greek Tavern and it's like visiting relations at their house who can cook incredible Greek food. As we live in Horwich, everyone we know loves the place. Also I think it's the last Thursday in every month they have Greek dancing and music...really good fun and you are...

We were a party of 8 so the restaurant advised that we prebook our meals stop ensure that our food comes out together. So we thought that it would be ideal to have to meze excluding Beef and Pork and one member in our party was Gluten free. We were advised that is fine they would replace the beef and pork with more chicken and fish. However on the day we were given vegetarian dishes and 2 chicken dishes, we did not receive any lamb koftas or any other lamb dishes. The vegetarian dishes were ok not the best, I have had better tasting vegetarian dishes before.

I wrote to the restaurant and I received an apology as the information was relayed incorrectly to the kitchen. But I don’t understand why as we were advised that your table is having the Meze excluding beef n pork and one Gluten free when we arrived and sat at our table waiting for the other members.

I was also advised that if we were to revisit the restaurant we would receive a discount on the Meze. But to be honest I don’t think I would take that chance again as the food was not great as the chicken skewers were dry and the chicken wings were very salty.

Please bear in mind if you are ask for changes to the set menu, there is a very good chance you might end up with the...
