Visited Chowdreys on Great Horton Road, Bradford, on Sunday 21st September 2025. It had been quite a long time since my last visit, but my daughter recommended we go while in Bradford – especially since they currently offer a fantastic deal between 12–4pm every day: a meal with a drink for just £5.50. That really is excellent value. We ordered the Lamb Naan Kebabs along with onion bhajis/pakoras. The portion sizes were generous, with thick, well-cooked kebabs that were nicely seasoned – flavourful without being overpowering. The naan bread was fresh and soft, paired well with the meat, and came topped with a good balance of onions, salad, and a side of chips, which was a nice extra. The dish was attractively presented and the bottled sauces on the table gave the option to add an extra kick if desired. Overall, very enjoyable. The restaurant itself is clean and well maintained, with comfortable seating and pleasing décor. Staff were polite and attentive, taking our order promptly, and the food arrived in around 10–15 minutes, which is perfectly reasonable. On the way out, we noticed they also sell mango and pistachio “whippy” cones for £1.50. We tried both, though they tasted more like an artificial frozen dessert than genuine ice cream, with only a hint of flavour. It wasn’t really to my personal taste, but for anyone who enjoys that sort of treat, it’s inexpensive and worth a try. All in all, we had a very positive experience. The food was tasty, the service was good, and the value of the lunchtime menu is hard to beat. I would happily recommend Chowdreys, especially if you’re visiting during the 12–4pm offer.

A small but cosy pakistani restaurant in the heart of Bradford’s south asian area, with comfortable seating and the convenience of free street parking right outside. The food offers excellent value for money. A large lamb karahi is just £13, and the large mixed grill (served with chips or naan) is also £13 - both generous in portion and full of authentic flavour. The rice and naan were fresh and tasty, completing a very satisfying meal. Service was another highlight. The gentleman looking after us was extremely caring and attentive, which added to the overall experience. That said, there are a couple of drawbacks. Cleanliness could be improved as the cutlery provided to us wasn’t clean and had to be replaced twice. Facilities are also limited: there’s only one toilet for both men and women, and there are no baby-changing facilities, which makes it less practical for families with young children. Would I return? Yes — for the value, location, and service, absolutely. But next time, I’d avoid relying on the toilet facilities and wouldn’t bring a baby along!

I was recommended this place as apparently it served good desi tea. I entered and was greeted by a rough “what do you want”. Placed my order for desi tea and a Ferrero rocher gateau. 20 minutes later, the desi tea arrived with half of it spilling out the cup before it landed on the table. The tea tasted bitter even though I asked for 2 sugars (they probably forgot about those). The gateau magically transformed into a milkshake on the table. When questioned about this, they assured me that I ordered the wrong thing and that they don’t serve this gateau. I clearly pointed the gateau on their menu and the young staff member then told me it’s out of stock and to order something different. As nothing else looked appetising and I wanted to leave asap, I asked for a refund which was given to me in old pound coins and a handful of copper coins.

Extremely Disappointing Service – Standards Have Clearly Dropped

I want to begin by saying this isn’t about the money, but about principles.

I recently attempted to place an order online, but encountered an issue with their payment system. As a result, I called the shop to place the order instead. I was then informed that placing an order over the phone would incur an additional £1 charge. I explained that the issue was on their end, not mine, and that I should not be penalized for something beyond my control. The staff member after some hesitation agreed to match the online price.

When I arrived at the shop, I made the payment using my card, assuming the agreed-upon price had been honoured. To my surprise, I later discovered that I had been charged the additional £1 anyway. It seemed like a deliberate attempt to overcharge me, hoping I wouldn’t notice.

I immediately challenged this, only to be told that the person I spoke to “wasn’t the manager” and therefore couldn’t issue a refund, despite being the one who made the original agreement with me over the phone. I requested a full refund. At first, he refused, but after standing my ground, he reluctantly returned the full amount.

If anyone had a chicken biryani on Sunday, June 22nd after 7pm, it may well have been the one they reheated after I returned it.

It’s clear that the business is going downhill if they’re resorting to tactics like this just to make an extra £1. Did they really think that once I arrived at the shop, I’d just accept the extra charge?

The manager needs to seriously consider hiring competent staff—or at the very least, train and empower them to make sensible decisions. Experiences like this do nothing but drive loyal...
