The George Social — Restaurant in Braintree

This is the worst pub I have ever been to!

I was in last night for a family function and encountered the following issues:

Underage children drinking in the pub. I watched a 10 year old drinking a beer and the barmaid just turned a blind eye.

Our party was told to pay by cash all night when the regulars were still allowed to pay by card so unless they plan on refunding our VAT, im sure thats rather illegal. In addition to this they ran out of change early in the evening and were short changing our party throughout the evening.

The bar staff prioritised who they wanted to serve first and completely disregarding bar etiquette.

The whole building was full of fire hazards and health and safety issues (pictures to follow).

The bar staff we giving us short measures, dirty glasses and pouring without any consideration for hygiene (Holding glass at the top and touching the nozzles with the glass, the situation was that bad that several member's of our party moved on to bottle drinks which tarnished our experience even more).

They had hardly any stock and kept running out of lines, including prossecco which we specifically requested extra for our party months in advance and were ensured that they would be prepared for us.

They continued serving certain customers well after they should have been cut off, this resulted in said customers becoming aggressive towards out party and it wnded up all kicking off, with the police having to be called. Off the back of this we were left comforting many small children from our party who were left crying and traumatised. My experience ended with up having to comfort my mother who has also been left traumatised by the whole ordeal. This was the absolute opposite of hospitality.

I will be forwarding my concerns on to the relevant licensing...

Food was very average, bar staff were miserable and rude. Took our order and before finishing it started serving someone else. Atmosphere wasn't great, felt very uncomfortable and had a feeling that at any point a fight could start.

UPDATE: as I cannot reply directly so your response I have added an update. I was at The Geroge in Witham, which I believe is this establishment.

I would also like to add that along with the other reviews below mine, I was also told I had to pay cash as I was attending the function? I was literally next to someone who got served before me and they paid with a card, I got served and was asked "are you with the function " when I said yes the response was you have to pay cash then?? Very strange.

Thankfully I left prior to the incident that needed the police, but in my opinion it was...

Played 'amusement' machine and despite 'winning' £53 the machine only paid me £3. I put in £100 anyway and could not even get what i was owed. Barmaid reluctant to call engineer but eventually did. Was told did not owe me anything. Can only asume machine was set up to not pay out regardless. Beware of this pub as they will steal your money. If you lose, you will never know you had no chance of winning but if you win you will not get paid out anyway. The money goes to the pub anyway. Downright thieves.
