Read moreIt was Saturday early evening and the place was rammed. We waited patiently and pounced on the first table to be vacated. A couple of pulled brisket burgers later we were feeling like we'd found our natural habitat.
So what's so good about Vocation & Co.?
It's a tap room - with character.
20 beers, 16 of which are kegged. I first discovered Vocation after buying a couple of cans from a well known UK supermarket and had planned to visit when we sailed through on our canal journey back home. The bar/pub/tap room is a couple of minutes from the canal, we had to go, it's the law...
"Life and Death" a 6.5abv American style IPA is kind of their signature brew, and rightly so, as it's stunning. I downed a couple of pints then tried their Mochaccino Stout which I'm guessing is from a pilot small batch brew - it's a pudding to rival any chocolate cake or liqueur coffee.
The weather forecast being dire prompted us to add a stopover day in Hebden Bridge and I had planned on making some "publisher suggested" revisions to the final draft of my book, but my mind is distracted knowing I'm only a few minutes away from more delights, like the Raspberry Beret, a 4.5abv Sour, or the Pride and Joy, a 5.3abv Hoppy Malty marvel, or Heart and Soul, a sessionable 4.4abv tangy IPA.
Sad I know, but I bought a Life and Death t-shirt, which isn't helping me focus on my writing.
Vocation & Co. is, worth travelling for. Roll on more horrendous weather, we could be stranded here for ages...
Oh, and Maya is really very cute - keeping her cool...
Read moreI am great lover of Vocation. It's possibly the best brewery in the UK. I cannot say the same for its bar in Hebden. My friends and I travelled to Hebden specifically to try some of the stouts that are notoriously hard to find where we live. On ordering 3 of the Imperial Kirsch beers (one each), we were told that they would only serve us one and we'd have to share as they are too strong and we wouldn't be able to handle them. I fail to understand the logic of the bar. Why market yourself as a brewer of stronger craft beers but then refuse to serve them to paying customers in your bar? Generally, the staff were rude and obnoxious from the start. We went in early and booked a table for later as they were full, despite having several seats available in the bar area. On asking about whether these seats would be available for us to have a quick drink, we were met with a patronising comment from the staff along the lines of "I've already told you we're full, do you not think I would have sat you already if I could?" The bar staff show what can be only described as disdain for their customers. I appreciate that the current climate cannot make for pleasant working environments. However, frustration should never be directed at the consumer. I would remind Vocation of its obligations under section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Whatever our experience was of the service provided, it was hardly carried out with reasonable...
