Room 10 or Room 101?? We received an excellent welcome, told we were lucky and had Room 10, the best in the pub. We were led to a separate detached small building adjacent to the pub which at first seemed to be rather cute. The evening meal was excellent and reasonably priced. We retired to our room. We were kept awake for most of the night as there was a large air-conditioning unit just feet away. The fan started and stopped all night long and was so loud that we seriously considered sleeping in our car. There were only breakfast staff available in the morning, and we had to wait until after the pub opened late afternoon (4.00pm) to ask if we could have a different room, but none were available. Also informed that the unit was not air-con but the cooler for Coke and could not be switched off overnight as Coke had to be kept cool until the pub reopened at 4.00 pm next day. We were offered a free drink at the bar as recompense for the “inconvenience”.

After another bad night (this time with the shower room toilet macerator deciding to trigger every so often even when not used) we abandoned our remaining booking and found an alternative pub.

We can only comment on THIS room, which we renamed Room 101 ! It was a converted single garage with kitchenette extension and a shower room extension beyond that. Very small, you have to squeeze against the toilet to open the shower door. Just one small individual shower gel to last two people for three days, no-where to hang damp towels, 3 broken light bulbs, a badly hung and unfinished front door and the bedroom window just 10 inches from the street footpath – curtains permanently closed.

Other reviews are good, so do stay here, great location, just a very short walk to the PR3 bus to the city centre which runs brilliantly every 10 minutes. Although breakfast was a disappointment, the evening meal was really good. Just avoid Room 101 !"

We did submit the above to the manager asking if he wanted to correct any errors, but no reply received...

Stayed sat afternoon / last min booking myself and husband as it was a half way stop for us .||The rooms are chalet style in the gardens ( stayed in similar room types over the years where they have done it much better ) .||The pub is a lovely old listed building with old world charm ( or it would be if looked after ) ||The staff were all lovely friendly the food was good pity we were too cold to not have another meal in the bar .||The pub itself is tatty / only needs a lick of paint inside .||Sure if they had nice thick curtains up and cushions people would want to sit in the window area - far too cold .|We sat near the log burner but sadly no one could get it going Jesus that and the other open fire should have been lit hours ago to get the place feeling warm welcoming - buy coal to|Make it easier on staff . Sadly I don’t want to sit in any pub eating a meal with my coat on the place was bitterly cold .||The rooms oh my so old fashioned needs totally refurb again . Wind whistling through the door the curtains need throwing and needs a new look entirely. The bathroom was very hospital like . The towels were very rough and threadbare.||The bed was comfortable but the light came into the room .||I didn’t have the breakfast as it was too cold my husband said it was ok but no fires on everyone sat in their coats again .||We won’t return it really wouldn’t take a lot to make people want to stay drink more have a meal if the place was warm cozy .||Way too dated and it’s like someone’s stopped caring such a shame . When some pubs get it so right and are packed . Others just drop the ball . Spend s bit of money making it look nice and have your fires blazing in the winter then sure your locals will...

A group of 12 of us went to The Lord Byron last night for post-work drinks, and I can honestly say it was one of the least welcoming experiences we’ve had in a pub.

From the moment we arrived, the landlord and bar staff made it very clear we weren’t wanted. Despite multiple empty reserved tables (which remained empty the entire time we were there), we were forbidden from sitting near them. We were constantly told where we could and couldn’t put chairs, asked repeatedly to move despite not blocking any access, and generally treated like an inconvenience.

After being told there was nowhere for us to sit, we were eventually “allowed” to use a back room—but only one table, no moving chairs, and strict instructions on where to sit. The level of control over a simple seating arrangement was frankly ridiculous.

To top it off, they refused to let us set up a bar tab even when we offered a credit card, which is basic hospitality in any half-decent establishment.

The attitude from staff was outright rude—unfriendly, inhospitable, and totally uninterested in customer service. If you like being treated like a nuisance for simply ordering drinks, this is the place for you.

The pub itself? A spit-and-sawdust joint that looks like it hasn’t been updated in decades. Given the state of the place, you’d think they’d be grateful for customers actually choosing to spend money there. Instead, it seems they actively try to drive people away.

Wouldn’t recommend. A complete overhaul—of both the pub and its staff—would be a good...

What a historic place. The pub itself is really old with low ceilings and beams. The floor is on 2 levels. There are 3 fireplaces. The walls have wood panels, really is lovely. The bar has an excellent selection of drinks. Which are served by friendly staff. We had dinner here 2 nights, and each night had different staff on who were all friendly and happy to chat to you. The Friday night, we both had cod and chips with crushed minted peas, delicious. Really good-sized portions. My husband had sticky toffee pudding and custard for pudding. On Saturday night, we shared a camembert with red onion chutney and toast. For mains, I had steak pie with chips and vegetables, and my husband had chicken and bacon tagliatelle. Again, everything was delicious. The bedrooms are in a separate building which you walk under a roof so as not to get wet. Our room has 2 twin beds with a good size shower room. The shower wasn't the best, but there was plenty of hot water. There is an air-conditioning unit in the bedroom, which also acts as a heater. Very efficient. We would definitely stay here again. It is a couple of miles to the centre of Cambridge, which we walked, but there is also a bus that you can get the PR3 from the centre of Cambridge and get off just round the corner on Maris Lane. It is very quiet here. There is ample free parking here.

Visited last night, marked change with food, the camambere with garlic and rosemary sharer, size of camambere significantly reduced in size, only enough for one, price £9. Makes this expensive for its portion size, saw also addition of lots of olive oil. Price is slightly reduced but not the same quality. Maybe small salad would enhance or just tomatoes or carot batons to also dip or have with it. Their opening hours 12 noon till 21.00hrs every day apart from Sunday when they stop serving food 17.00hrs. Note Mondays kitchen is closed. Bar still open. They are also have rooms if people book to Opening times added, correct as at 19.9.2022. Monday kitchen closed added 01.07.2023. Bar opening times 12.00noon to 23.00hrs. Kitchen is 12.00noon to 21.00hrs. Every day, Apart from Sunday 12.00noon to 16.00hrs. Monday kitchen is closed now.
