The food was ok. I felt that the value wasn’t good, however. Keep in mind, I’ve only eaten here once, so maybe other food options from the burger I got are better. My burger had a heavy mustard/vinegar flavor in the sauce that I didn’t care for. Maybe people that favor a mustard flavor would like it. The meal was quite expensive for what you get too. My wife and I both got a burger and fries and the meal was ~$77 after a 10% optional tip (more on that later). I did get loaded fries, but that is a hefty bill for the food we got in my opinion. I believe you get a better value from a Five Guys type restaurant and I generally think Five Guys is a little overrated. Maybe I’ve been spoiled with good and relatively cheap burgers back in the U.S.
I didn’t appreciate the way this restaurant went about adding the tip. It feels sneaky to me. I requested the bill after we were finished and the waitress gave it to me after a long wait and asked me to look over it to make sure everything looked good. I thought she meant to check that we were charged for what we ordered. However, there was a 10% optional tip added to the bill that I can only assume is the reason I was asked to review the bill. It is optional, so you can request to have it removed. However, I assume most people are like me and do not want to deal with the social awkwardness of publicly asking for a tip to be removed and I think they know this. It also doesn’t feel like “gratuity” if it’s tacked on automatically. Being from the U.S., I’m no stranger to tipping after a sit down meal, but I believe the pay structure of waiters in the U.S. is different from the UK and they are not as reliant on tips for income. I’d imagine that that cost is reflected in the more expensive food here. I don’t mind tipping for good service, but I didn’t think my service was all that spectacular and the sneaky way the tip is inserted into the bill left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe others see it...
Read moreAfter some searching for the best burgers in Edinburgh Burgers and Beers Grillhouse often hits out on top of the "Top 10" lists which is why I decided to give it a try.
I decided to sit outside and was greeted by a lovely server who was very helpful in giving us the details of what we could eat as we don't eat meat.
My first disappointment came when I learned that an £11.95 burger does not come with chips, I checked with the server she had said the burgers are "pretty large". so that put me at ease. They could be so large and so good that they could warrant the 5p shy of £12 burger......Oh, how wrong I was.
When you build your own burger you are met with a menu to pick and choose what you would like in your burger.
I chose the "Freshly baked brioche bun". There was nothing fresh or brioche-like about it, it tasted a bit dry and airy like it was from a supermarket packet, not baked fresh.
Let’s refer to my image of the burger with cheese on, does this look like a "large burger"? Now this burger is half empty, yes, my fault assuming that a £12 burger comes with the standard bits of tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. Instead, you have to pay an extra £1 for it.
So we have a dry, small, bland, half-empty £12 burger......
We decided to order "hand cut chips", I don't even want to write much about these, you can just refer to the images. £5 for chips dripping with oil, next time just give me a cup of oil to drink.
What you see in the pictures below cost just under £30, a bare-bones burger with soggy hand-cut chips.
This could have been a bad day for the kitchen, but you can't use that excuse for the fact that you charge £12 for the worst burgers I have ever experienced. Please charge more appropriately.
I would pay £5 for this with chips as I've had the same quality...
Read moreGuys, I don't understand all of you writing reviews raving about the burgers?! The burgers were so disappointing. They were dry and overcooked - we weren't even asked how we wanted them done as we ordered - that should have been the first red flag! Most decent burger establishments will always serve them on the pink side but these were such a let down. If I had been ordering from a run of the mill pub, I would have been disappointed, but ordering from here at £18 a burger (not including any sides) while the menu raves about grass fed quality butchers meat etc, no this was beyond a disappointment. Our family are big milkshake fans. So when I saw their milkshakes were £8.75 - I knew they would be the real deal! Generally if a milkshake costs over £6.50 on a menu in my experience it will be thick and legit, but no...disappointed again! This was not an American style milkshake, it was thin and the glass size was very small considering it was basically £9. Someone on these reviews said it was the best strawberry milkshake they'd ever had in their life and my friend you need to get out more, because this didn't even scale on my radar of milkshakes worth drinking.
It was my daughter's 11th birthday - she picked the restaurant based on wanting a decent burger, a milkshake and a fuss made of her for her bday. As a plus point I mentioned it was her bday and they brought her a free chocolate dessert with ice cream to the table and she was delighted about that. They also give great kids packs with loads of activities for them to complete and cute burger glasses etc for them to wear. The service was good, but truly I cannot recommend coming here when there are so many other restaurants in Edinburgh serving far superior burgers, legit milkshakes and all of that at a lower...
