Nestled in a charming courtyard, Deacon's House Café offers an inviting escape from the bustle of everyday life. From the moment you step inside, the cozy atmosphere and warm hospitality draw you in, making it a place where you feel both welcomed and reluctant to leave. This café is not just a spot for refreshments but a haven of comfort and culinary delight.

The first thing you notice about Deacon's House Café is its enchanting location. Tucked away in a quaint courtyard, the setting feels like a secret retreat in the heart of the city. The surrounding architecture adds to its charm, giving you the sense that you've stumbled upon a hidden gem. This picturesque entry sets the tone for the delightful experience awaiting you inside.

Upon entering, you are greeted by a sense of warmth and authenticity. The staff are genuinely welcoming, often opening the door for you with a friendly smile. Their attentive service immediately makes you feel at home, ensuring your visit is as pleasant as possible. The café’s interior complements the atmosphere perfectly, with its cozy décor, soft lighting, and inviting seating that encourages you to linger a little longer. Whether you're visiting alone, meeting friends, or looking for a quiet spot to unwind, Deacon's House Café caters to all.

One of the highlights of this café is undoubtedly its food. The menu offers a variety of delicious options, but the toasts and buns truly stand out. The toasts are perfectly golden and crisp, offering a satisfying crunch with every bite. Paired with a choice of toppings, they make for a delightful snack or meal. The buns are equally exceptional—soft, fresh, and bursting with flavor. Whether you opt for a classic buttery bun or something more indulgent, the quality of the ingredients and the care in preparation are evident.

The café also boasts an impressive selection of drinks, from freshly brewed coffee to specialty teas and refreshing cold beverages. Each drink is crafted with care, complementing the menu's offerings and enhancing the overall experience. For those with a sweet tooth, the dessert selection is a must-try, with an array of pastries and cakes that are as visually appealing as they are delicious.

On Saturday we visited the cafe for afternoon tea to celebrate our sister's 60th birthday. One word AMAZING. We were greeted by Philippe and a lovely lady from Australia. We were treated like royalty. We had spiced carrot and red lentil soup to start which was delicious. Sandwiches for tea were ham and cheese, egg and salmon and cream cheese on brown seeded bread. The sandwiches were fresh and tasted amazing. The smoked salmon was definitely my favourite. The selection of cakes - carrot cake, orange and pistachio slice, chocolate brownie and shortbread. I tried the carrot cake which was delicious, light and not over powering at all, unfortunately I didn't have room for the rest of the cakes but my sisters enjoyed them. The scones well personally I don't think you will find better they are divine. We had the fruit scone with jam and cream and they were amazing and an added bonus was they were still warm. The tea for my sister was stunning and we can't thank Philippe and his staff enough. The cafe is unique, beautiful, old and has a lot of character. The staff are friendly, accommodating and all have a smile on their face. The food is amazing. My sister and I returned on Monday before heading home and had the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel which was delicious. I have visited this cafe on numerous occasions and will visit again when visiting Edinburgh again. Don't be put off if you have to wait for a table you won't be disappointed. Thank you so much to you all for making our experience...

I had marked this on possible places to eat before our trip to Edinburgh. It is super convenient, located just a short walk outside the castle gate at the top of High Street. The weather was cold and rainy, but even though they were very busy we were able to be seated within just a couple of minutes. They do have a covered outside patio area nestled between two close buildings for times when the weather is warmer, or for those who are OK with cooler temperatures.

It is Café style, you order at the counter and give them your table number, then your food is brought to you when it is ready. The specials of the day were too tempting so we opted for the potato league, soup, and the Irish stew. Both were very reasonably priced. my wife had a flat white and I had a cup of tea so it was very easy to stay under the $10-$20 per person range.

The staff is very friendly and engaging. The service is quick and efficient. They also sell pastries at scones that looked delicious! Our soups came with lightly toasted brown bread the perfect addition. The gentleman running the counter, had a French accent, so I was even able to fumble through a few phrases which we laughed about naturedly.

For a super high populated tourist area, we were wonderfully pleased with the great depth of flavor in each of our soups. We were never rushed or made to feel like they were waiting for the table to clear. Should we ever be in Edinburgh again we would definitely put this on a list of places...

OVERVIEW One of the best cafes on the high street! Worth the visit for the food and time travel experience! PLUS + The “Scottish organic porridge served with red fruits” was very good at a top 4* level. It was rich and creamy, with a good portion of red fruits. + Very good quality ingredients. + The cafe interior and exterior design were rustic and intimate. The outside dining experience had character; the table numbers were written on the wall. Made you feel like you were transported back to the 1800s. + Perfect breakfast, brunch, or lunch spot. + Staff menu recommendations were based on genuine advice rather than formality. + Welcoming and genuinely friendly staff. + Quick breakfast service. + Walk-in breakfast time availability. MINUS - Kitchen staff appeared cramped and overwhelmed by the tiny kitchen. - Kitchen was overexposed. - To minimise crowded payment queues in front of the overly exposed kitchen, the restaurant could benefit from a quick, hassle-free table QR code payment method, i.e., the "Sunday" payments app. ORDER Breakfast: * Scottish Organic Porridge Served with Red Fruits
