I used this bar as a stop-off whilst doing one of our events. Fair enough, I didn't get permission from the management in advance, but I thought I would be doing them a favour by having a group of people come in and buy drinks whilst they worked out some puzzles. They didn't serve hot drinks, which I think would cause most people to do a U-turn straight away (confirmed by the fact the pub was empty when I arrived). The toilets had a key-pad in place to prevent passing tourists from using them. The person I assume was the landlady asked the group not to spread out around the tables, but to move up close together. An embarrassing scenario played out, as each person on arriving asked for a hot drink, only to be declined. One of the group had a takeaway coffee in their hand, and was barely through the door before being told they couldn't bring it in. Essentially, it was the antithesis of a 'Traditional Scottish Welcome'. Afterwards, everyone from the group commented on the appalling service, and made a informal pact never to return there again. Avoid this pub at all costs, unless it goes under a well-publicised and well-deserved change of ownership - a shame really, as when you enter, the pub itself looks quite cosy...

Unfortunately, our visit was let down by a coulple of older, drunken pipers who took over much of the space. They were extremely loud and obnoxious - using foul language, and at two different points knocking over drinks without much care. Their bagpipes and belongings were spread all over the place, making it hard for other customers to move around or enjoy the evening comfortably. They were stumbling out of the pub — visibly drunk, bumping chairs over and nearly toppling into other customers. It created an uncomfortable and chaotic environment that really took away from what should’ve been a great night.
It’s a shame, because the venue and staff are top-notch. However, I do think these gentlemen should’ve been cut off long before getting to that level. I’d absolutely return, but I do hope the pub takes a firmer stance on managing this kind of behaviour, especially when it begins to affect the experience for other guests.
