I came here for the most recent a Burns' Night Supper. I ordered the Smoked Scottish Salmon for Starters, the Balmoral Chicken for Mains, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding for Dessert. The Smoked Salmon was delicious, and went very well with the sour cream, but was also incredibly tasty on its own as well! The Scottish Oatcakes were good too. The Balmoral Chicken as a dish on the whole was quite satisfying in both appetite and taste. The chicken was a little dry and I couldn't quite taste the thyme in the carrots, but the dish was nevertheless satisfyingly tasty and well cooked. The Sticky Toffee pudding was amazing! The combination of the cold ice cream and the hot pudding went very well together. The presentation of all courses was well done, and I was full by the end of the meal. The atmosphere for Burns' Night was quite lively and enjoyable. The pub being built in the early 19th century, at around the time Burns' Night began as a tradition, also added to the experience. Service was excellent! My waiter, who I unfortunately did not get the name of, went out of his way to make sure that the food fit my dietary requirements. He answered questions and checked with the kitchen, even changing the bourbon icecream in the dessert to regular vanilla ice cream for me, for which I was grateful.

I came here during my visit to edinburgh with my family. We sought out this restaurant because of our wonderful experience with Nicholsons pubs and thought it would be consistent with the rest. We had to wait over an hour despite them telling us 20 minutes but they were very busy so we understood. We waited upstairs and decided to get drinks in the bar. Unfortunately the bartender ignored me even though the bar was not busy. I was clearly waiting but he was serving people as they walked up after me. I eventually had to get the attention of someone else to pour our 4 drinks and take them upstairs... Once seated, things got better and our waitress was nice. They got better for a few minutes at least... all of our food came except mine ( I was the main one in the group who was starving and needing food too) I waited patiently but eventually contacted the waitress. She apologized and said she forgot to put the burger in, but would fast track it. Okay I'm fine at this point mistakes happen... another 30 minutes go by and still no burger and we are ready to pay, I talked to the waitress again and was told it still hadn't been made. I was pretty much done and wanted to leave but then the burger came ( over an hour after we ordered) the waitress did apologize profusely and offered me a discount which would have risen the rating to 2 stars, but the experience in the bar was too pathetic. I am sure that this was a standalone experience, based on their other locations quality, and the other reviews here, but this was our experience. I would give this place another shot when I go back to scotland. Update 2025. I came back here 3 years later and it was the exact same type of experience as listed above. People who were sat well after us got our food and had left before we got ours, it took over an hour for the food to come, and they were severely under staffed. The food was good but the restaurant needs to figure out their staffing situation.

Very nice atmosphere: very warm and festive. Lively without being overwhelming. Mulled wine was quite nice: not too sweet and with a particular balance of spices. Exactly what we needed after a few hours spent outside with a cold wind. Staff was very kind. There was no table available and so we were given a buzzer to be notified when one would have come free. Unfortunately the menu was missing 7-8 courses, 3 of which being exactly what we were thinking to order. We would have liked to know that before sitting at the table. We weren't therefore left with too many options that were suitable for us considering the plans we had for the night. We went for a mix of small platters. The baked Camembert was quite tasty. It was the first time for me to eat it with jam and quite liked it. I found instead the chunky chips to be just meh. Even adding salt didn't add much flavor. The sauce on the sauce didn't help either. The broccoli were very undercooked for my taste. The portion of garlic schiacciata was surprisingly small: 3 very thin and small sliced in total for 4.5 GBP.

Stopped in here for dinner and we were so glad we did. The staff were very friendly but not hovering, the atmosphere was just what we were looking for in a Scottish Pub. We were seated quickly at the window which made our first meal in Scotland all the more memorable. I had the haggis, neeps, and tatties. I'd never had haggis or neeps (rutabaga) before. The haggis and mashed potatoes were excellent but I found I don't much care for neeps, not bad, just not for me. My wife had the beef and ale pie and she loved it. Aside from the neeps we both cleared our plates. We each selected a bottle of cider/beer from their drink list and each of us were very happy with our choices. If anything they could use one more staff to help the dinner service. The upper level had two ladies, serving, waiting, running drinks, and bussing. All that and they still managed to get our orders taken and delivered quickly, it just took a long time to get our check because they were so busy, but once we got their attention we were paid up in no time. Great experience!

Deacon Brodies Tavern is a very busy bar and pub in Edinburgh with good reason! I stumbled upon Deacon Brodies on my hunt for some comfort food in Edinburgh - Scottish fish and chips! The pub on the first level was packed with happy drinkers. As I walked up the stairs proceeding to the restaurant, patrons were leaving while announcing wait times of close to an hour. I remained hopeful and stayed at the front line waiting for someone to put us on the list. Finally, a woman playing the role of hostess, waitress, and most likely manager said she could get us in five minutes! She deserves the greatest acknowledgment hustling nonstop to make the entire experience enjoyable. Excellent food, great drinks! It's a mixed crowd from locals to celebrities. I was sitting right across from a well-known American actress who was sitting enjoying her meal in peace while no one bothered her. This was a fun visit while in Scotland. I truly felt I had the authentic Scottish pub experience that I was searching for!

The food was really well and tasty. We ate there after the tour we had about Royal Mile, and the guide recommend that restaurant, because he said it was the best in that zone. When we arrive, the pub it was really full, but the restaurant is in the first floor. We went to the first floor, and they said they didn't have any table, and we need to wait about 45 minutes. We wait for our table, during this time, we were drinking a beer and water there. The personal of the pub, it was really nice. I can say the same from the people of the restaurant, they were really nice and very attentive during our lunch. After 20 minutes or less, they called us because they had a free table. Also, they recommend some dishes, we follow the waitress, and we took the dishes she said to us. All the dishes were very tasty. We loved it. I totally recommend that restaurant. If you one day you are visiting The Royal Mile and you want to eat very well, I recommend that restaurant.
