Nice place. Okay food. I would like the give a few pieces of advice to the team that was working on Sunday, 9th October 2022.
I went in to the establishment with my partner, my sister and two nieces. We opted for the offer that was available, two courses for £15/16, I can’t remember exactly, and a kids meal plus drinks.
We ordered a burger, Mac n cheese, scampi, bangers and mash and a kids fish and chips. When ordering, the elder of the waitress’ informed us that there was no mash left so I opted for chips instead. She insisted it was no problem. After waiting 45 minutes at the table, the bartender, (whom I assume had been asked to come over because the original server was incompetent and didn’t want to let us know she was wrong in what she said earlier,) comes over and tells us that because there was no mash, the chef had thrown away all the sausages so they had to remake them from “frozen”.
Another 10 minutes pass and finally we get our food. 3 starving adults and 2 starving children can eat finally. The younger waitress brought our food over and told us for our wait, we would receive 25% off our meal which was a lovely surprise. This gesture was the only thing through the whole experience that warranted a tip from us. The elderly waitress, I’m sure she was in charge, as lovely as she was, belittled my sister when she was paying.
This I am outraged at and would expect an apology.
To think it’s okay, when your staff member has forgot to add the agreed discount, when she came up to the bar to enquire about the discount, you said, “oh, it can’t be that much can it?”
What does that matter to you? Why does what you think even matter? Your staff and we pay your wage. The fact my sister felt so ashamed and awkward after you made that “shameful remark,” is unacceptable. I hope the whole tip went to the younger and much friendlier servers as opposed to yourself.
I fully expect a response and apology from you, albeit we will never step foot in your establishment...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at The Scottish Engineer. I was impressed by the friendly and welcoming staff. They were attentive and helpful, and they made sure that we had a great experience.
The food was also delicious. I started with the haggis bon bons, which were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The haggis was rich and savory, and the coating was crispy and delicious. The nachos were also a hit, with plenty of cheese and toppings. The mushrooms (from the tapas part of the menu) were cooked well, but they weren't our cup of tea to be honest.
For my main course, I had the Aberdeen Angus cheeseburger, which was cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful. The bun was soft and fluffy, and the toppings were fresh and delicious. The macaroni and cheese was also a hit, with a creamy and flavorful sauce and plenty of cheese. The chips were crispy and delicious, and the onion rings were a nice addition.
The rectangle Slate plates are a really nice touch to the experience too.
Overall, we had a wonderful experience at The Scottish Engineer. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Edinburgh.
Here are some specific details about my experience:

Read moreHi guys just wanted to put some input into your establishment after eating here 3 time in last 4 weeks. The first time we had eaten her the place had just been refurbished everyone was on the ball checking on us even through all staff did not know the menu which we understand as a relaunch the food on the first time was good obviously the chefs had been taught by regional chef on the way it should be served and how the cooking matrix should be followed. Food was tasty hot service was nice. But I soon as they have stopped being overseen the staff are doing what the want. The second time the chicken was microwave or a merrychef was used as blackened bbq sauce chicken stuck to dish so dry. Mash was cold on sausage and mash peas got chucked on with a cannon. Peas on fish when no peas asked for. Cleared tables ourselves and no check was done by front of house staff. Had to ask for dessert 3 times and came out at different times. Might I say there was only 3 tables eating. The 3rd time place was so cold chips like scraps from friyer. Think u need a little more training or more authority to look after the business or...
