This is my second time coming to this café with the same friend.
I’m going to begin with the decor: it’s very quirky and cosy. I really love how the place is done out and the balcony upstairs with more seats is a really nice touch! Though at first glance it may seem a little crowded (and it can feel a bit like that) it’s really cosy! Perfect if you like that kind of atmosphere.
The food is actually really nice, though the soup was just warm when it got to me, the cheese in my panini was not entirely melted and also just warm. That being said, it was still delicious, and large portion sizes too! The cakes are absolutely out of this world though! I highly recommend the cake!!
Unfortunately, the service was a little subpar. The first time we came to this cafe we stood at the door for almost 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us (there was maybes 1 or 2 couples in the whole place) and were sat for almost half an hour in an empty cafe without anyone taking our order. The second time, where the service was speedy and the other staff were extremely happy and friendly, our server was quite blunt and seemed as though she wanted to be anywhere but there. (I’m sure she was just having a bad day though!)
The prices are reasonable, considering it’s the city, though some things may seem a little expensive. However, like I mentioned, you get a decent portion size! The food is definitely...
Read moreShort review: Picturesque location. Great eggs royale. Marvellous café.
Visited this place last summer which was a completely accidental discovery as the other cafe we intended to have our breakfast in was packed. When in Edinburgh, never break the most important rule, that is, book in advance.
But it was a blessing in disguise as we did have a good time in this Scottish cafe, awarded in 2018 as Best of Edinburgh.
Situated on Cockburn Street and just off the Royal Mile, this cafe has pleasant interiors, friendly servers and good food.
The full Scottish breakfast, which is a humble but usual fanfare of fried egg, bacon, sausage, Haggis, baked beans, mushroom, grilled tomato & crestfallen-despondent toast which decent as a meal, but the Eggs Royale blew our minds. The cooked to perfection poached eggs, placed on a bed of smoked salmon & topped with the creamiest flavourful Hollandaise sauce. The Eggs Royale looked good, tasted great and was a well balanced meal, bursting with flavours. I would recommend it over the full scottish breakfast. They serve breakfast till 3pm and have an interesting lunch menu as well. If the weather is pleasant, they do have outdoor seating, which I am certain has its own...
Read moreSerious egos from the girls working here. Came in as a single diner waiting for my train, because I was a single diner they were offering tables of two in-front of me. When I eventually got a seat I bought breakfast, coffee, tea and scones. Once I’d finished eating after about an hour They came over and pressed me for the table saying that, it can, potentially, get busy very quickly. At this point there were, in the area I was seated 3 empty tables of four, let alone upstairs and downstairs where they were completely empty. I assume this cafe have a profit sharing model otherwise I’m completely perplexed why the teenage students running the shop have the audacity to be rushing me off when I had barely been there for a hour. Food was ok, coffee was average. But for me the power tripping of the waitresses to tell me the restaurant has the POTENTIAL to get busy, so I must move on is outrageous, I’m a paying customer who’s bought two drinks, a meal and a cake. If a customer sitting there after they’ve finished eating & you’ve got multiple free tables, yet you’re asking customers to leave, (like some minority report hospitality) because it has the potential to get busy, you’re doing...
