We had a few days in Edinburgh and booked here in advance as a treat! Wow! It's amazing! Our guide was Mackenzie who kept us entertained throughout with jokes and stories. We started off by holding and smelling a cacao pod to introduce us to where the finished product starts off whilst Mackenzie told us about chocolate producing countries etc. Whilst doing this we were treated to the most delicious hot chocolate drink and a few different chocolate buttons from the different producing areas so that we could taste the difference . Next we were taken into the making room where we were shown the process of how the pod becomes chocolate! After that we were able to select a mould ( so much choice) to make our own bars and also select toppings such as mint, buttons, caramel pieces etc ( again so much choice) The next stage was the tasting room and oh my goodness ...so much chocolate for us to taste and sample....and every bit delicious! Whilst we were gorging ourselves Mackenzie told us how chocolate had developed over the years from just a drink to making it into a solid form and then the introduction of milk and white chocolate ....then bang up to date with the latest ruby chocolate. After that we were able to collect our own bars plus buy some of the chocolate we had tasted, if we wanted to ...we definitely did 😆 Highly recommend this tour...a real gem in the heart of Edinburgh......lots of information, lots of fun but best of all.....lots of...

An Absolute Must in Edinburgh for Chocolate Lovers!

The Chocolatarium is hands down one of the best experiences I had in Edinburgh — an absolute must for anyone with even a passing interest in chocolate. It’s not just a tour; it’s a deep dive into the world of chocolate that’s informative, engaging, and incredibly fun.

The value is excellent considering everything you get out of it. I especially appreciated the section on where the beans are sourced, and the thoughtful explanation of Fairtrade, Raisetrade, and Direct Trade. It was eye-opening to learn about the ethical and economic impact of chocolate production, and how to distinguish everyday chocolate from truly good chocolate.

The tasting session was another highlight — we sampled chocolate ranging from dark to milk, with flavor notes that were fruity, spicy, and everything in between. It was not only delicious but educational, helping me appreciate the complexity of fine chocolate.

One of the most brilliant parts? While you’re learning and tasting, your own custom chocolate creation is cooling — no need to return hours later or the next day to pick it up. The whole experience is interactive and thoughtfully paced, making it perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers like myself.

Highly recommend — you’ll leave with a full heart, a happy palate, and a newfound appreciation for the world...

The chocolatarium was great fun! I went by myself, but there were many other groups who joined me and we had a fab time altogether. Katie was our tour guide and she was amazing so friendly, happy and knowledgeable. She got everyone involved and was happy to answer all our questions! I have a gluten intolerance myself, and Katie was super helpful ran through the allergen sheet with me as well as giving me a sheet to help me through out our tour. Which was fab as it can be tricky finding things that are gluten free. We got to try an amazing range of chocolate from plain milk to haggis chocolate it was so fun to have such a variety and learn to taste them properly. I throughly enjoyed making my own chocolates, we got to pick milk or dark and then pick our shapes. Which was a lovely touch. I would 100% recommended this tour to anyone it’s suitable for all ages, there are a few bits of history and info in there that little children might not be interested in but all the fun hands on trying and tasting will keep everyone happy! They also have a beautiful shop which supplies a huge range of chocolate from different places which was great to see so don’t forget to head to their shop after. Thanks again to Katie and all the other staff at The Chocolatarium for my wonderful trip.
