In an effort to stay awake after a 16 hour journey from the States to Edinburgh, I planned on seeing Colinton Tunnel and eating at a local pub afterwards. In my research I stumbled upon The Spylaw. The atmosphere was vibrant, service was incredible, beer was great, food was phenomenal; I loved it. I had the steak and ale pie with veggies. Delicious. Had it with some HB Sauce, recommended by staff, & it kicked it up another level. Even the vegs, carrots and broccoli, were something to write home about. After a long day of surviving on airport trash, a fresh meal was food for the soul. I was a little punch drunk from all the traveling, but thank goodness the staff was patient. Make a reservation to ensure you have a table. Thank you for making my first experience in your fine country a delightful one!

For some reason my original review didn’t save 🤷‍♀️ gorgeous wee bar and the staff was so amazing and friendly. We ordered a main and dessert and both were delicious (although I do with the main had come with a little more gravy). The sticky toffee pudding was mouthwatering and it was great to see the GF options on the dessert menu as well! Both dishes came out relatively quick. Will definitely be back for a visit!

Hi James, just had a superb meal at your new kitchen diner, The Spylaw. The staff were exceptionally friendly + attentive, can't believe this is the old Spylaw Tavern, hardly recognised the place. The staff, food + ambience of the new Spylaw is 5 star + we will definitely be back... amazing! Wishing you + Yolana every success, you so deserve it! Belinda (Claire Daly's Mum)

Sunday roast was absolutely delicious, everything cooked to perfection. Gorgeous turkey with stuffing plus loads of seasonal fresh veg. The service was also prompt and attentive, and more happy to oblige my request for subbing out one of the sides. I'm not a fan of pigs in a blanket so asked for a Yorkshire pudding instead, which doesn't come with the turkey roast, and this was happily arranged. I even got a wee pot of extra gravy, yuuuss!

Only quibble was with the side salad of rocket & parm with balsamic, and I love balsamic but this was nearly swimming in it, ha. Anyway I passed on the suggestion to my server that they maybe cut back on the balsamic by at least a third, and he very attentively took this on board and said he would certainly pass on the input to the kitchen. All very good humoured and perfectly solicitous throughout.

The menu here (and interior) have had a total update and the results are brill. Hadn't been in a few years and it was a happy surprise, tres au currant! Still the same comfy village pub but without the average grub, and the interior looks the same at first glance but is sooo much nicer, not the old fusty vibe it kinda had before....

Really disappointed, worst nachos I've ever had. The salsa was like a bland tomato soup and the nachos themselves were burnt on one part and wet and floppy where they'd been stuck in the "soup". When someone hates rice and specifically asks for curry and chips why give them just a few chips and STILL give them rice? As for the macaroni and cheese, it's supposed to taste of cheese and not flour I'd have thought? Don't bother with the gammon, unless ALL you want is the gammon and some chips, if you like salad or veggies with it go elsewhere. Back to the starters, the garlic bread is great for those of you that don't like it too strong, my wife says the waiter probably showed the bread to the garlic as they walked by! Lastly, I noticed a woman lift her breaded fish and bash it on plate it was that hard, spotted her later eating it with her hands as the knife and fork were no use. There's more, table was set wrong for the numbers on the booking, despite us having to preorder the starters/Mains (making the total lack of quality worse as they had plenty time to prepare) and they got the drinks order wrong. I'm sure you can guess we...

We visited this evening for a birthday dinner. Having read recent reviews, we were a little apprehensive... However, felt compelled to share our great experience! Service was exemplary, we were made to feel very welcome, it's all about the service (and good food and wine!) for us, and we were not disappointed! The new decor has created a fantastic and enjoyable surrounding, very modern and welcoming (toilets spotless too!) and an amazing beer garden! There was a lovely family feel, with a well stocked toy selection in the kids corner (very descrete, and downstairs, out of main bar/booth area). The wine and bar service was excellent. Food was obviously very fresh (would say more need for a proper steak on the menu however) and desert was, again, freshly home made and plentiful (fab cheese board). Very good gin/whisky selection, but would say (only negative point), did not have opportunity to enjoy, because time was up, table was rebooked :( Will definitely be back though!! Finally, the eatery Colinton has been...
