We travel to The Prince of Wales, Baslow from Derby on a friend recommendation. It took us approximately 40 minutes to arrive in Baslow, but the journey itself was very scenic & a joy.
The Prince of Wales is located in the heart of Baslow, on Chatsworth house's footstep. The restaurant has a modern yet rural twist; fitting perfectly with its soundings, & is a beautiful place lookwise.
The Prince of Wales offers a well varied menu & has a great selection. Our choices below:
BBQ Asparagus, with olive oil, mayonnaise, poached hens egg & walnut crumb - The flavours to this dish were incredible. The walnut crumbs really do make this dish so flavoursome.
Brown Crab Rarebit, with burnt leek, mayonnaise & red mustard cress - If you're a fish lover, then this dish really is for you. The crab wasn't over powered by any of the other condiments & was very tasty. Highly recommend if you're into your fish dishes.
Soup of The Day - The soup on offer was tandoori carrot. This really was a unique taste; packed full of flavour. It had a great curry flavour taste to it, but for someone who isn't into their Indian food, then I would probably recommend not ordering this soup, as the tandoori flavour really quite strong.
Slow Roasted Baslow Beef, with Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables & Beef Gravy - The beef I can honestly say was probably one of the best cuts of beef's I have ever had. It was perfect, succulent & out right delicious. The Yorkshire pudding were crunchy, the roast potatoes were fluffy, the seasonal vegetables complimented the dish so well. The beef's gravy was rich, full of a red wine taste & completed this dish extremely well.
Cherry & Vanilla Ice Cream - I am not really a dessert person, but I have to say, this really was the best ice cream I have ever tasted. The creaminess was on point, the flavours were of the highest order; this dessert really did leave me speechless & I would strong advise you trying this for yourself.
Without a doubt, I will be visiting again & I will most defiantly be recommending this...
Read moreI live local to this pub and until this last visit would have given three stars. I am tempted to give just one star as I have never been treated like this in a pub in a long and distinguished drinking career. We were having a lovely Christmas Eve late afternoon drink when a large group of people arrived. A member of bar staff came over to us to say we now had to move because the tables were reserved. This is not a practice I am overly in favour of but the fact we were never informed that these tables were booked makes it worse. There were no notices on the tables and we were not informed of the situation by members of staff. As the group took over the pub there was no where for us to go, drinks had to be left and we just had to leave.
I feel it is fair to mention my previous visits to this pub. Of the three pubs in Baslow I reckon Rowleys has the best quality beer and before I have had nothing but great customer service from the staff there. It's not a locals' pub - unfortunately, Baslow doesn't have one - but its the closest the village has to somewhere local people can go without being swamped by visitors to the area.
This Christmas fairy tale does have a happy ending as our home is five minutes walk away and we came back and possibly saved ourselves around £40. However, how do we go back to a pub that leaves us feeling so unwelcome because of their basic mistakes? No effort to seat us somewhere else (or the people on the next table). An embarrassing moment not...

I opted for the roast lamb, which was nothing short of excellent. The lamb was tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by a generous portion of fresh vegetables including carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and green beans. The meal was elevated by a massive Yorkshire pudding and a dollop of mint sauce, adding a delightful traditional touch to the dish.
In summary, The Prince of Wales Pub in Baslow offers a wonderful dining experience with its refreshed surroundings, engaging kitchen views, excellent service, and delicious food. It's a place I would highly recommend and look forward to...
