Ruined Birthday Six of us went for my brothers and my 30th birthday celebration as a family. We were sat at a table which was a decent size for the 6 of us, and asked for what drinks we wanted. I wanted to share a fruity cider with my mother, and gave our order. The waitress asked for identification from me AND my mother, but not my sister or twin, who both asked for alcoholic drinks. I did not take my ID as it was a drink with dinner with other people who are definitely over 18 years old. Legally a 16 year old can have a drink with a meal in the presence of a parent. My mother who is 60 years old luckily had her ID, when the waitress saw her DOB she didn't think that there is no way I could be younger than 18. In her defence I do have adult braces, and look young for may age. Legally she could have given an empty glass for me to have half a bottle of cider, to share with a responsible 60 year old adult. This put a downer on our birthday celebrations. I wouldn't normally mind having a soft drink, but as it was a celebration this was extremely embarrassing.
Unfortunately this was not the only hiccup of the evening. My brother in law ordered a pint of coke with ice, he was given a half pint with no ice. When the bill came we were charged for the pint which we questioned and the waitress asked which glasses we were given for proof, before reducing the charge (the glasses were right in front of her on the table, she knew who had the soft drinks because of the earlier issue).
The next problem was my food order. I had ordered the vegetarian lasagna. My dish arrived last, with not much of a time delay between the rest of the meals . When I cut into the lasagna there appeared to be meat. The waitress confirmed that she had selected the wrong dish to send to the kitchen. I had to wait a short time to get the vegetarian dish I originally ordered. The waitress was very apologetic and corrected the problem where the dish was prepared very quickly. As I am the slowest eater this meant that I was the only one not eating at the start and the only one eating at the end. For this error a 20% discount was offered, which was generous and appreciated. The image is the meat version of the lasagna.
If there was only one of these problems in one visit then the rating I gave would have been higher. The lasagna was delicious, but extremely hot when it arrived due to the rush to get it out. The waitress was kind and following the rules, but should be better at judging ages and realising errors made.
Unfortunately I would not recommend this pub to eat out, and strongly advise everyone, no matter their age (even at 60 years old) to carry an ID if they plan to...
Read moreWe parked at the Wheatsheaf Baslow initially for one night in our motorhome. We rang up first to check that it was ok to park up overnight. The manager was very pleasant and informative, and let us know it was fine to park up for free in the upper parking area. As usual with pub park-ups it is expected that you buy some food and drinks from the establishment. We arrived before 2pm on a Friday and there were plenty of places to park. We knew it was going to rain so we chose away from any overhanging trees. The sound of inconsistent water drips on the roof of our MoHo just drives me insane. They open at 8am and serve a brilliant cooked and continental breakfast until 11am. The food menu throughout the day offers lots of choices to hopefully suit everyone. If you have any issues with anything, let the manager know so that he can rectify it there and then, we did this on an occasion and he was lovely, all was sorted. The staff are all so polite and very efficient. The walks around here are varied to suit everyone. A shorter walk along the river to the Bridge Inn was very pleasant. We elongated this with a tough steep walk up into the country and it was a circular route back down into Baslow. We enjoyed it around here that much that we stayed another night. Ate evening meal again The Wheatsheaf. The next day we did a flat walk into the Chatsworth grounds and to the house where we had a coffee at the courtyard cafe. We elongated this walk, which was a bit tougher if you have mobility issues. We went to Pilsley village and went in the Pilsney Inn for a drink. There is a farm shop there but we didn’t get chance to visit on this occasion. The next morning we had a full cooked breakfast in The Wheatsheaf (very good value) and then we tipped the bar staff and said our goodbyes. They do have in-house accommodation, and free wi-fi, however I cannot comment on the rooms as I did not take a look. We will definitely be back to this establishment again in the future. Thank you to...

Sunday lunch roast dinner - Nothing but terrible!
I wish I'd read the review posted five days ago before we visited. I don't write reviews often, and when I do it's because I've got something really positive to say. I'm writing a review this time in hope that management sees it and makes some RADICAL changes.
You just CAN'T serve food of that quality at that price. Everything had been reheated....badly. The parts that were supposed to be fresh and crispy were limp and grey, the potatoes.....we couldn't cut through them with the steak knives they served the dinner with, the meat...there were supposed to be 3 different types but you honestly couldn't tell what was what. The majority of the food went uneaten. I can honestly say that we have never had a meal out that has been worse....! An extreme statement to make I know, but I want to make it really clear to any potential customers who haven't eaten here before.
The lady at the front of house was lovely. She dealt with the situation very well. She offered to discount the meals of poor quality straight away (I get the impression that this has happened before). She also offered us 30% off the bill because she dropped the notepad with our orders, meaning that food came 30-45 minutes late (the worst thing to happen when you have two hungry children under 5 becoming increasingly irrate....but that's another story!)
Positives:
The building has a lot of potential. You need to spend money reupholstering lots the seats, but it has a nice traditional feel.
The outdoor area is ideal for children.
The lady at front of...
