China Rose Bawtry — Restaurant in Doncaster

Four of us went to the China Rose on a Friday evening. We had a mixed starter for four which reminded me of those frozen sharer starters you can buy in from the supermarket. When asked "was everything OK with your starter?" I replied that the food could have been hotter.... to which I got a shrug and he took the remaining food away. Not a great start. We then moved onto the mains. We ordered a dish each and one extra dish. It's a good job we did is all I can say. The portion sizes over the years have definitely dwindled. I used to go to the China Rose many years ago on a semi-regular basis when I lived in Bawtry and it certainly isn't what it used to be in terms of food. I was particularly looking forward to the Chicken in Lemon sauce which was a large single breast of chicken, sliced and drizzled with sauce, for £12. That's it. Rice and chips are extra and the portions can only be described as mean (for the price). Come on China Rose, potatoes and rice cost very little. The food arrives suspiciously quickly too (just an observation). The other dishes were OK but I had to go looking for the monk fish in the dish. We then moved onto the desserts as we were still all hungry at this point. They can only be described as a selection off a kids menu? The cold desserts are Frozen rock solid when they come so you have to wrestle to get a spoon through. In fact one has to wonder how much of the food is bought in frozen, warmed and served? The wine selection is good and they're not too overpriced. The surroundings are lovely but the food needs to improve massively to reflect the nice...

It was a take away therefore no comments on atmosphere. We spent nearly 80 pounds and the food was inedible. It tasted as if not the usual chef did it. We ordered pancake rolls bbq spare ribs ( really awful, when they used to be the star of the food), curry chicken tasted as the whole curry powder container fell on the pot the sautéed potatoes were terrible, the egg fried rice was sticky and not loose as it normally was. Plus other dishes we ordered were low quality, greasy and tasteless. We called to complaint. A man took the call and all he said was he hoped next time the food would be better. He was not apologetic. This is not good enough. We thought the person who answered was one of the people at service, so we called again hoping to talk to a manager. A lady answered the phone. We requested to speak to the manager and it was the same man. No point to talk to someone who was not apologetic, it sounded like he was mimicking what we told him. We have never complained before but only praised the food . It was a really bad experience and the food went to the bin unfortunately. Ribs tasted like ham hoc BTW. Poor client service at taking reviews. We called to be heard but not only we wasted money, we wasted time too. It was not one dish, it was all the dishes. Definitely something is not right in the kitchen and consequently not right with...

So disappointed with the take away meal tonight! Got sweet and sour chicken, no batter, just rubbery chicken, with no veg or anything & ordered crispy shredded beef, was like leather, I had yo shut it out. Couldn't chew it...very cheap looking meal, had many a meal sit down in the restaurant and was not disappointed, not sure if its a different chef or its cheaply thrown together because the restaurant is closed with virus...wont be having take away again...awful

Recent update: 7th jan 2023 Thought we would try China rose for a sit down meal to see if the quality had improved.....!! On sitting down we were told no sliced chicken!! No seaweed, no crab, I thought maybe it was so busy they had run out...but no I think they have moved from the fresh sliced chicken breast to frozen cheap chunks of chicken....and meat... Awful, the garlic chicken starter was awful, so chewy like rubber and the main sweat & sour chicken Hong-Kong style was awful, like chewy end bits , The last time we had a sit down meal was about 8 years ago and the food was so nice!! The chicken Hong-Kong style used to be sliced lean chicken as to now its chunks and cheap prices of meat...4 of us and the bill was £189.00 very disappointed, won't waste our money...
