Melton Fish Bar — Restaurant in East Suffolk

We took a family vote on whether it was 3 or 2 stars. First the good - Chips were ok. Curry sauce was decent. Scampi was good. Service was friendly.

Nothing was salted (or vinegar’s) despite asking at point of order.

Plaice was truly tiny with more batter than fish for the money (over £7) and it was unbelievably greasy- did I mention unsalted?

No one asked and I presumed that my request for it all to be salt and vinegared had just been done when I was called to get my order

Cod was meant to be ‘extra large’ but was average sized for ‘large’ at best, but at least wasn’t too greasy and was meaty.

Mushy peas were bland when usually the kids love them as is.

Had whole family upset at the lack of salt and vinegar and the blandness of it all without them - we were at an outdoor picnic table to eat in the evening so couldn’t do anything about it

Used to use/recommend this place as the best fish n chips in the area by far but currently can only recommend going cod, but no ‘upgrades’, or scampi…...

Delicious - we had a medium cod and chips and a large cod and chips. Delicious and quick. There was pre-cooked fish and chips, ready to go. So it took about 5mins from order to food. I like the speedy service. The fish was fresh and delicious. Given it was a Saturday night 6pm, it was right to pre-cook and expect a rush. The chips were the best I’ve tasted in a while, soft and sweet. Batter was lovely. Picture is the medium cod and chips. Definitely enough as a portion. I asked to view the chip sizes as a large family on holiday and having our own chip shops we are fully aware portion sizes vary around the country, I agreed our family would need a large and medium portion of chips, when arriving back at our caravan the portions I had received was nothing comparison to what I was shown which should have been a 'large' it served 2 people! The fish wasn't thoroughly cooked and was very mushy inside. When spending over £40 on food I expect it to be 1. Edible and 2. The right size portions I was shown.
