Edit 20/2/2025 - My comments below still stand but today we were really disappointed with the service; when we arrived we were advised there would be a 30 minute wait for food, no problem. Our drinks order was taken very quickly and we werent ready to place our food order but we had to wait around another 20 minutes before our food order was taken. We ended up waiting in excess of an hour for our food which really wasnt ideal as it was around 2pm, we were both very hungry and short on time. The food was delicious but the delay impacted on the rest of our day. We also noted it was cold in the restaurant and only partially lit, another, nearby table also commented that heating wasn't on and they were cold too.
We used to visit here many years ago when it was 2 pubs, the fox & hounds and the Lone barn. First time I have eaten here since and despite reading other reviews saying it had lost its charm, we were impressed to still see the stone floor, huge active fireplace, and it's attractive vaulted ceiling. We arrived at 5pm without prebooking and didn't really expect a problem but there was a bit of huffing and puffing over table availability. Apart from large gatherings for birthdays, etc, we haven't needed to prebook since before Covid. Luckily we were found a table for 3. Service was very good and the food and drink were excellent.
Had dinner yesterday, party of 4 adults with 2 young children. Ordered starters and mains. We were given forks only to begin with, had to ask for knives. For Starters we ordered a sharing platter, extra bread and Olives. The sharing platter with the bread was brought over, but we still didnât have any knives and they didnât give us any plates. Found a waitress and asked for plates and knives. No olives arrived so asked about these. Half of the drinks were then brought over without glasses and no ice. Another 10mins later the other drinks (just the bottles) were brought over, 1 was wrong and we had to ask for the correct drink. Asked for glasses again. Correct drink brought over with glasses. Still no olives. Waitress came and took away the starters, even though one of us was still eating. She also took away the knife and forks and didnât replace them. Mains were brought over we had to ask for more knives and forks. Some of the food was dropped by the waiter onto the table and he asked if we wanted it replaced?! Yes please. The waiter asked how many knives and forks we said four, a waitress returned with a handful of knives and forks enough for about eight people and dumped them all on the table. The three of us had roast dinners which were fine one of us had the steak and ale pie which only had one piece of meat in it. No follow-up service asking how it was or if you wanted puddings, We found a waitress scrolling in the corner and asked her for the bill. The food was okay, but the service...
