After a nice jant up Scaffell Pike, I needed a nice hot meal with a cold drink and this place in my opinion hit the spot. The place is quite deceiving it looks small from the outside but it does extend to the back. I was seated straight away and was handed the menu and ordered my first cold drink...oh yes Kingfisher, it was cold and went down well so well I ordered another when I ordered my meal. For starters Lamb tikka Main Meal was chicken in Chilli and Garlic Masala with Pilau Rice and a Nan Bread. So whilst I waited I scanned the place, walls were painted white with a few paintings and and ornaments equally placed. For me it was nicely down, not overdone but just about right. Seats were well cushioned and comfy and tables were clean. Not long to wait before my starter came out. The waiter placed the small plate in front of me and he came back with a sizzling plate and placed it nicely on the wee plate, a nice personal touch. It came with a dipping sauce, can't really describe it. It was like a like mayo but not as thick and quite refreshing. The plate also came with lettuces tomatoes and cucumber ??? IMO old fashion and should be replaced with something else like spicy onion? So the tikka went down well and next up was my mains. The meal smelled amazing and was full of flavour, the sauce had a touch of sweetness in it was quite nice and different from the other chilli garlic meals I had in Scotland or maybe I didn't notice it before but it was amazingly good and well balanced. The meal was spicy and I didn't get all sweaty on the back of my neck as I normally would although as I was 3/4 through it I did start to sweat a little. The pilau rice was nice fluffy so no complaint there. The Nam bread was cooked perfectly, not overly burnt, soft and tearable. Just the correct size for one person. Staff was attentive so no complaint there, Kingfisher beer could come in a larger size or maybe I was just thirsty from my walk. Price wise it was about 28 quid so yes would happily pay that for a delish meal, but please get rid of the tomato lettuce and cucumber side. The plates (a little old fashion looking) could had been warmed up before serving too, but I'm happy to give it 5 for this. ...
Read moreThis place is a hidden gem, like the curry house that time forgot! It's as if it was frozen in the late 90s, the decor needs a refresh and the staff lack finesse, even the menu is old school. But! It's great!
Sometimes it's nice to open a menu and recognise everything on it. It's even better to order classic dishes and find that they taste better than you remember!
It's tired, sure, but we've been twice now and had a cracking curry at a sensible price. I'll happily go again too next time I'm in Whitehaven
I would also mention that our most recent visit was on a busy Saturday night. One table was particularly obnoxious and rude to the staff. The lads looked of the age to have visited curry houses in the 90s but unfortunately their manners remain stuck in time and have definitely not improved with age. The staff dealt with them with patience and managed to tread that narrow line of appeasement without getting walked all over. Well done the staff
Wish I'd taken better pics, will try on...
Read moreA very nice place to visit for a lovely meal, I rang ahead to check if they was open for business and if my powerchair would be able to get in and once we got there a couple of chairs and a small table at the entrance had to be moved for me to get in, we sat at a table near the front which was roomy enough to park my chair into and we started with a cool beer whilst looking at the menu, the meal was delicious and we shall be making this our regular Indian when we want a night out, Amber who served us is very friendly and nothings too much trouble.there is a carpark just across the road from Akash should you need to get here by car. They do have toilets but not for the disabled users unless you can walk in unaided, I had my folding walking frame which helps me in such instances such as this. Don't let this put you off coming as the service you get is...
