Bewicks Rothbury — Restaurant in England

Arrived after a long walk desperate for a coffee at 2pm. Confronted by a very unpleasant member of staff who informed me that they were closed. I was surprised as it was so early and people were still sitting both inside and out. He went on to say that a party of 20 were arriving and the cafe was closed. Another member of staff appeared and was very apologetic. I explained that we only wanted two cups of coffee and were happy to sit outside. He asked the first member of staff if we could just have coffee and he became unpleasant again stating we are closed. Surely if they were closed for a private party of 20 then there would have been a sign or something up. Seems silly to lose customers for one large party. Does a party of 20 really warrant closing the whole cafe especially when there was at least 26 free chairs at free tables outside alone. Shame because we are regulars to the area. At least one member of the team needs some customer...

We reserved a table for 10.10 online we arrived just after 10 with no sign of any staff. We were eventually acknowledged by the owner who said that they were not yet open and his staff were not in. Despite the door been open and a sign outside to indicate it was open. We explained we had a table booked to be told Google was not the owner and he is and could we come back in 20 minutes. We did not go back as if you are going to advertise you are open and offer online bookings but can't be bothered to be pleasant we didn't think it's worth the custom. A simple offer of drinks and could you please wait could have gone a long way. We do not live local and were just visiting the area. maybe opening times need adjusting to avoid this happening to others and some improvement with the customer service. I rang Berwick's a week prior to our meal enquiring for Beef Wellington as I had been suggested Bewick's from a number of people in a Northumberland Facebook group. It wasn't on the menu however the Cafe said they'd be more than happy to make it for us. You absolutely went above and beyond our expectations and made our experience incredible and memorable. Given the best seat in the house with views of Rothbury around, you have wonderful, friendly and extremely attentive staff working the floor and your chef's skills are immaculate. The meal can only be described as chef's kiss magnificent. Cannot wait to return to try more of the delicious food and cocktails you have to offer. Really happy to have discovered the place. Thank you all once again for making our experience amazing, you've given us high expectations for Beef Wellington...
