We were looking forward to dining at the Clocktower restaurant after my wife received a gift voucher for her birthday last year as we had never been before, however, we were very disappointed during our visit today☹️ The food was OK but very pricey, which might have been mitigated if it was matched by perfect service, but unfortunately it was not! We started our meal with a delicious anti pasties sharing plate (Lishman's cured meats, foccacia, cheese, pickles, chutney), however, it took a long time before our platter was cleared after we finished despite a lot of serving staff around, most of whom were too busy chatting! I had the sole mueniere with a side portion of herb new potatoes for my main course, which was very good. My wife ordered the pork cutlet with bearnaise sauce with a side of herb new potatoes. Our waitress said it didn't come with any sides when we ordered, however, the dish actually came with a side of fries! The dish was also missing the bearnaise sauce, which my wife had to ask for. One side portion of potatoes was large enough for both of us and we would have liked to have been informed when we ordered as we ended up taking home the spare portion in a doggy bag. Whilst we were waiting for our main courses we noticed that a couple on the next table received a sandwich for one person 5 minutes before they received a salad for the other person, which we would find unacceptable as we would want both our plates to be delivered at the same time. It took a long time again for our main course plates to be cleared by staff after we finished. My wife had the Black Forest chocolate mousse with a latte for her desert. I ordered the panna cotta & strawberries with a pot of tea and I was extremely disappointed that I had been charged £11 for a very underwhelming small portion of panna cotta with a few strawberries on a large plate! We were so unhappy with the poor service received that I asked for the discretionary 10% service charge to be removed for our final bill of £130 and it's very unlikely that we will return to dine at the...
Read moreI have eaten at the clocktower quite a lot of times which I suppose must mean I like it or why word I go back. The food is good and the service as well but in the the end I'd have to say this was probably my last visit. The clocktower has simply out priced itself. £10+ for a starter and £35+ for a steak although other mains were £23+ plus sides. Not a massive choice and I avoided a steak as last time even after asking for the chef to go light on the salt it was covered in salt so had the lamb which was quite good. Tonight we couldn't even have a drink in the bar first because it was heaving with people presumably at a wedding. Then when we got seated we were subjected to constant flashes from the wedding photographer in the adjacent room and a constant stream of people passing our table to go in/out of the party. The food is still quite good but over priced and although the service is generally good other fairly simple things spoil the experience. One last point. Our pre booked taxi was £15 to the restaurant and yet our taxi home booked through the hotel was £21. Something is...
Read moreWas having the time of my life at rudding. A Room and Dine indulgent Xmas prezzy to each other. Amazing room, spa and experience at first. Drinks reassuringly expensive but fine in the context. Then made the mistake of eating in the clockhouse on Saturday evening. The main dining room stank of fish so moved to other room. We were Still upbeat at that point and smiling and enjoying ourslelves...then...Caesar salad to start made a mcdonalds salad look gormet. Then...the £105 tomahawk for two arrived carved up like dog food and cold. I demonstrated this to the waiter by putting my hand on the 'sizzling hot stone'. Dissapointed but we gave them constructive and reasonable feedback and left. The picture of "tenderstem" cold broccoli sums it up. Such a shame. So close yet so far. Was worth the money up until it wasn't. I'll be marching to the front desk shortly for further feedback giving and reparations. I'll go back to using our usual treat spa place in Durham. Ribroom at ramside is a proper restaurant and know their onions. Might go over to Devonshire Arms for Sunday...
