My husband and I and our good friends had breakfast here today. It was very busy and the manager explained the meals would take time to arrive. We ordered hot drinks, orange juice and the full breakfasts. I ordered the vegetarian breakfast which includes avocado. I love avocado. When our food arrived, there was not enough cutlery in the container on the table. I had to ask a waitress three times for a knife. During our meal, no staff asked us how our food was. I am currently suffering with a sore mouth and on medication so I avoid eating any spicy food. Whilst eating my food, my mouth became very sore. I eventually got the attention of a waitress and asked her if there was any spice in my meal. She said she didn't think so. I asked to see a menu again. There was nothing explained in the vegetarian breakfast about ANY hot and spicy ingredients. The manager came to our table and he said there were chilli flakes in the avocado. I told him that this is NOT in the information on his menu for the meal and I have a sore mouth. He apologied and offered milk to drink and said he would take my meal off the bill in front of my husband and friends. I said the milk wasn't necessary because I would take some medication and I thanked him. On the way to the toilets, I spoke to the manager again to show him the medication I was taking. I said the meal was nice, I didn't want to make a fuss but my mouth was very sore from the chili flakes. He then said he would take off the drinks from our bill. I thought that was generous to take that off the drinks as well since my negative experience affected all our meals. Eventually when the bill arrived(we had to ask for three times)the manager only took off the price of MY orange juice and coffee from our our ENTIRE bill! I was shocked and embarrassed in front of my friends and husband and didn't want to cause anymore stress in front of my them so we paid our bill. The Manager never came to see us to check on us if everything was alright. The right thing would have been to have taken my meal off the bill. I hope the manager amends his menu adding information about chili flakes on his avocado and trains his staff to be more attentive to his customers during their meals. Some people are actually allergic to chili's. It was overall a very disappointing...
Read moreI can’t say the coffee here is anything other than great. Sadly the other aspects of the visit were really lacking. We arrived hoping to have breakfast as our two favourite cafes/coffee shops where we are regular customers don’t open till 10am on Sundays. We were seated in the window which was a nice spot to people watch. Ordered coffee, fine, it wasn’t made clear on the menu there was a surcharge for plant based milk. I don’t mind there being one, but you should be told what it is. I believe it was about 55p per coffee. Either that or they added a service charge to the bill even though we only had coffee. I think this is the highest surcharge I’ve ever seen. Pretty ridiculous. But I let that go as it was excellent coffee. It was however made clear there was a surcharge for dairy free and gluten free food. I’m lactose intolerant and don’t eat gluten. Upon asking what dairy free and gluten free options there were on the menu, I was told flatly “none today”. This was explained away as being because they clear out of these products on a Saturday and they don’t order more in till the next week. I’m sorry but it’s 2024, a big percentage of people will ask for these options, sort your ordering out. I’ve never experienced this in any other cafe in Harrogate and we eat breakfast out almost every weekend and have done for at least 5 years. It’s not acceptable to leave people who require these options going hungry just because it’s a Sunday (clearly one of their busiest days since the place was packed) seems pretty silly to me. Left feeling quite annoyed, wishing we had waited till our regular cafe opened, paid £8.15 for two plant based coffees, as well as starving. Wouldn’t return, felt like it was more for day trippers and tourists than locals. Poor show overall, good reviews on here as I’m sure their menu is decent for those...
Read moreOn first impressions I really liked this cafe - the decor was modern, clean and cosy and the welcome from the staff pleasant. The black and gold theme across the plates and cutlery gave a high end feel, even if random items were actually plastic, and everything was clean. The food menu isn’t overly large but there’s something to suit most for breakfast and a number of the sweet treats are on display at the counter.
Service for the hot drinks was quick with sizeable mugs, and plastic a jug of water was provided for the table. The staff stressed food was prepared to order so could take twenty minutes, but ended up being quicker, and was presented well. Sauce was provided in a small quantity in a paper pot, which was a real shame and not in keeping with the rest of the vibe, but everything was cooked well. Bizarrely they stated they weren’t able to offer scrambled eggs with the main, despite it being an option on other dishes, but instead the poached eggs on the full English were perfect and the black pudding very thick.
Getting service for some post-meal items was a little difficult and the card machine for payment appeared before even checking we’d finished, but it remained a nice relaxing atmosphere throughout the visit. The final price did feel a little steep for such a casual brunch but for a more unique independent option I would...
