Visited 149 at Barnard Castle for fish and chips today (Good Friday), and while I expected it to be busy, the experience was incredibly disappointing from start to finish.
To start with, a lovely lady took our order and payment, which was fine—though they were already out of large cod and fish bites. Not ideal, but we were happy to make do. However, we were never asked if we wanted our food open or wrapped. When our order number was called, I went over and politely asked if we could have curry/gravy over the top of the food. The staff member already had it in pots and, after shaking her head at me, reluctantly poured it over. Unfortunately, all the portions ended up with curry—even the one I’d asked to have gravy on. I said it was okay and that we’d just have curry, but she had to go out back for more anyway.
When we got to the park to eat, the disappointment continued. I have never seen a cod so small—it was tiny, the batter was burnt on the outside but weirdly soggy and undercooked on the inside. The chips were cold, and the curry sauce was horrible: thick, powdery, and just unpleasant. None of us—me, my partner, or our three kids—could eat the food.
We’ve always liked this chippy in the past, but today’s experience was shocking both in terms of customer service and food quality. We ended up throwing most of it away, which is unacceptable given how expensive it was. I’m not someone who normally complains, but I felt really let down and won’t be...
Read moreAs a visitor to the Barnard Castle area we thought if the we would give this place a try. Ordered a regular cod, large cod and large chips. Also 3 cans of pop a bottle of water and 2 curry sauce but £29.71 I thought was a bit steep, but a good chippy normally is a little more expensive. However, I waited for what I thought was 2 pieces of fish to be fried, but no, just the one was being cooked, the other had been sat there prior to me actually ordering. The chips where sat in the hot hold, again from before I ordered, and the guy on the till nodded to the fryer to move them back to the fry side so they couldn’t be seen…. I’m not stupid I know how this works! The guys on the gry side where then having a conversation as to the broken fish that was sat in the hold saying it was ok as it was a clean break…. Lo and behold this was my regular fish! When I questioned this as he boxed it up, I was told it had only been there a few minutes …., it had not at all, but I did feel that I was being fobbed off. As the order was to take away we went to the park (2 minutes walk) and sat down! The batter on both fish was anemic to say the least. The batter on the regular fish which had been sat in the hot hold for A FEW MINUTES was wet and soggy and the fish was dry! The chips had been refried to warm them back up and were dark brown in colour. I have no issues in paying for good food, but that was awful, and I hope this review helps people not to...
Read moreWe have been here many times in the past the food is always good. But disappointed with yesterdays visit the food was good as always it was just the size of the cod we were served was the disappointment. We understand during the cost of living crisis businesses have put their prices up but they should not then start to reduce the size of the fish they are serving otherwise people may stop visiting. We ordered a normal sized cod and chips the couple sat on the table next to us ordered a senior citizen portion cod and chips.
When ours and theirs came out the fish was the exact same size but they had paid a lot less than we did. My son ordered a large cod and I swear it was the size we were served for a normal sized cod on our last visit some time back.
Sorry for the 3 star view only based on increased price but smaller portion of fish. If your customers do not point out their disappointment then you will never know. As always the fish was cooked beautifully we did enjoy it but just slightly unhappy with what we paid for a much smaller portion than...
