I had the full English breakfast here today.
The food, served on a warmed plate, was well cooked and hot. However, my personal preference is to eat sausage which does not have a lingering flavour of garlic! They make a point of stating the sausages come from Bonners, a good local butcher, but one can only assume that either Monks Yard. staff prefer sausage with a garlic overtone or else they don't taste the food they serve!
Again a personal preference but the two slices of bacon could have been cooked to be more crisp. There was a large amount of fat on each slice, probably because of the cut of the bacon used?
The egg was flipped as I had requested and the hash browns were hot. The mushroom, possibly a Portobello, was dripping with juice but did not retain it's heat for long.
The granary toast was cut thickly and served with 2 butter portions.
The café is situated in a shoe box shaped room with a pyramid shaped ceiling. This gives an acoustic which amplifies all the sound and thus the volume of conversation increases to compensate! It is a pity that the background music played did not help - it was the sort of lively, beat music played in exercise sessions! It was just after 9am for goodness sake, I for one would have preferred to have something more sedate!
All in all, despite the friendly service of the staff, not a very...
Read moreFriends suggested lunch here today. We didn't know what to expect. As soon as we entered this restaurant we felt relaxed and welcome. A beautiful old building, with lovely art on the walls. The staff were great. The menu suited every taste. Two of us had pork and apple burgers with coleslaw and fries. My husband had ham, egg and chips. My friend Paula had the tart of the day, which was mushroom and Stilton, with a salad, and extra fries. All local produce, and home made. I only live 15 minutes away, so feel like I have lost out on this beautiful venue for far too long. It also has a few other companies in the Yard. A fab gift shop, with very unusual products. Also, a yarn shop. Which is beautiful. They do have some felting products, crochet, embroidery kits, Tilda fabric. Also a venue for workshops etc. I also give them my 2022 award for the the...
Read moreCame here for a breakfast this morning and must say it was the worst bacon a pouched eggs I have ever eaten now. I order bacon and eggs on toast so I expected it to come with the bacon and eggs on the toast not be bought out burnt bacon and under cooked pouched eggs. Then having to wait another 4 minutes for the toast to come as the bacon and eggs were getting cold then having to put the bacon on eggs on the toast myself. I will admit when the bacon was bought out if it was ok I just said yes as I was hungry though. But if you have to ask the customer if you have cooked the food right that is not a good sign. I would not recommend this place to anyone or return. If your looking for a decent breakfast in the area I would recommend going next door to...
