Given the area's rich food heritage, I've always been amazed by the lack of fine dining restaurants in and around Whitby. And so, Restaurant Number 20 shines like a beacon amidst a sea of fish & chip shops and overpriced pub food. The restaurant is cosy and intimate ran by a husband and wife team with an open plan kitchen, and this ethos spreads to the service and food. The service was very friendly and attentive; knowing when to be discreet and when to stop and chat. The menu is a small but expertly curated mix of seasonal and local produce, so naturally expect plenty of fish and seafood. The brill was the standout on this visit, but on past visits the aged fillet steak was equally delicious and perfectly cooked. What really makes Restaurant Number 20 stand out for us is the attention paid to the desserts. So many places - including those with Michelin stars - are often let down by forgettable dessert options. But here, it's arguable that the desserts are the stand out. With the Burnt Cheesecake an unforgettable experience that we haven't stopped thinking about since our first visit, and a must-have at every visit since. Restaurant 20 is truly hidden gem well worth seeking out, and should be top of the list for anyone looking for a restaurant for a date night or special occasion along the North Yorkshire Coast

A really great place. The owner provided exceptional service in this intimate dining room. The interior is decorated cleanly with impressionistic paintings on the walls while soft but fitting music plays as you relax and ready yourself for the meal. The changing menu comes on clean A4 paper, probably printed recently, and never reused. A nice touch. The food was high grade. Relatively small but nicely thought out portions of good quality ingredients cooked well. To start I had lamb chops. A highlight was the panna cotta - perfectly done. If you are looking for a place to eat that will leave a lasting positive impression and don't mind forking out a bit for the experience. Go here.

This was a surprising delicious meal we had while on holiday along the Yorkshire coast. My first thought was that the name ‘Restaurant 20’ was pretentious, but the dining experience was the opposite- a candlelit living room turned dining room. This was a perfect cozy meal between friends. Our bill was about £63 per person with drinks. The menu was short and meat heavy, but everything was delicious. We had grilled sea bass and a small steak, both excellent. Starters of beef salami and mozzarella and one of the stars dishes was the Light and delicate panacotta, yum. Sue was a wonderful host and offered us tips on where to find local produce and fish.

A hidden gem! I was treated to an evening to celebrate a special birthday. The restaurant is discrete and unique. We were welcomed with a warm and friendly face who made us feel like friends throughout. This was my first Michelin experience, I had expected pretentious, possibly a little “posh”, yet the staff were approachable and the setting was cosy and comfortable. I felt welcomed in to someone’s home. The food was absolutely delicious. The menu small, yet we felt spoiled for choice. My partner and I chose different dishes throughout so we could get a taster for everything. We went several weeks ago now and we are still talking about how amazing it was. We like to rate dishes out of 10, and on this occasion, everything got a 12!! The waitress was attentive and generously topped up our wine 😊 this restaurant was worth the visit to the East coast! I am already hoping to return …. Thank you number 20! What a beautiful and...

Absolutely gorgeous family run gem 💎

Hidden away, this glorious lil place serves the tastiest food I've eaten in a long while. Sophisticated and delicious, each course was so good I slowed down to enjoy every bite (I'm normally a very fast eater). The limited menu was a welcome sight as too many options are a turn off, and I appreciate a restaurant sticking to a few dishes and doing them justice. I had the Roasted pumpkin and Monkfish which were both so tasty and had a great balance of flavours. The Clementine sorbet was a perfect way to end the meal but the Panna cotta looked amazing too.

The venue is intimate and quite chic, not too cluttered. The host is so so lovely, I kind of want to be her best friend! The fact is family run is an added bonus as it's great to see and it works so well!

I hope to be back in Port Mulgrave again soon, so I can book a table knowing I'm in for a...
