We stopped here on the way back from Cornwall and were very hungry by the time we arrived. At first look it just looks like a typical truckers cafe so were expecting some really nice food (as they are usually the best).
We were greeted with a lovely smile from the waitress and asked what we would like to drink (ordered a black coffee and an orange juice). She then gave us a few minutes before returning for our food order, we didn't have to wait long. I ordered beans on toast and my other half ordered bacon, chips and egg.
Our drinks arrived. Mine was lovely - you can't really go wrong with a black coffee. However, my partner said that his orange juice smelt funny and tasted off. He did not complain about it to the staff he just did not drink it.
We waited 30 minutes for our food and he was getting very agitated and went up to ask where it was when it appeared. My beans on toast was okay to be fair, again you can't really go wrong (it is not the kind of bread that I would use, but again it is a truckers cafe and they want hearty meals for their long drives). His on the other hand he did not really like and only ate some of it.
He went up and paid and we left...
To be fair it was quite busy in there and I am not sure how many staff were on in the kitchen. We did wait a bit too long for our meals but the food was decent enough when it came.
Would we go again? Probably not but that does not mean that you shouldn't try...
Read moreDined here on a reccomendation whilst visiting Cornwall to see friends. First thing to note was how busy it was. I was there around 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. Very busy diner for a busy road with nothing much around and no surprise. They had a very extensive menu which isn't always a good thing. From T-Bone steak, lasagne, salads, paninis. sandwiches, breakfasts, roasts and deserts. Every plate of food I saw come out from the kitchen was HUGE. I went for the Hungryman Breakfast at a little over £10. It was substantial to say the least and served on a massive oval plate as evidenced by the two side by side slices of perfectly cooked and non greasy fried slices. The whole thing really should have come with an emergency phone number - 999, it was that big. Everthing on the plate was top draw in quality and taste. I particulary liked the Hogs Pudding (those 3 brown things in the pic). I didn't have a single gripe. My friend did however. He had the mixed grill, which although good on taste defeated him as all the meats were too tough to be acceptable in my opinion.. I'd rate his choice at a 2 out of 5 for...
Read moreDon't listen to the nay-sayers. Been twice a week for years. Know all the staff on a first name basis. Food incredible, nothing too much trouble. Extra gravy? Fine, no charge, extra sauces? Fine, no charge. BUT, remember, it's a "truck stop/cafe", it is NOT a posh restaurant, so yes, there is mismatched furniture, wipe clean tablecloths etc, but the food is always second to none. The meat in the roasts falls apart, you don't need a knife it's that tender! Breakfasts from Smokies are also the talk of legends down this way. Never been a regular to ANY cafe, used to shop around. But now haven't been anywhere else for food in a long time, and never had a bad meal. To all the nay-sayers, if you have a problem, voice it politely, because if you treat the owner like dirt, he will reciprocate! Even get a "Hello Boys!", every time we walk through the door. They even remember our order! Long live Smokies! And to all the people saying how it's a rip off, a large breakfast is £5.95. My uncle and I have a roast of the day, large breakfast, a shandy and a pot of tea between us, and it's £16.90, cheaper...
