Humiliating, insulting service While I understand that the establishment is concerned about making sure they do not serve allergens, I have never felt to humiliated by wait staff in my life. On entering they asked my partner if anyone had any allergies and he turned to me to see if I wanted to share mine and I told them “nothing that anyone needs to worry about.” The waitress then loudly insisted that I tell her what I am allergic to, in front of our party and the rest of the dining room. I have mild allergies to milk and egg whites which the dr has suggested I avoid if possible but that I can have small amounts as long as I am taking the prescribed medication to allow me to do so. I told the waitress that I was fine and would just order what I knew was suitable for me but she loudly insisted that I had to tell her exactly what I was allergic to, so I did. When I ordered she came back and told me that I wasn’t allowed what I had ordered as it had milk in. I told her that was fine and I would just leave the part I couldn’t have but she against insisted loudly that I wasn’t allowed it. Other customers were turning round and looking at me at this point and I was very embarrassed. When the server brought my food out he loudly announced to the room that he was bringing the allergy food. As a dr myself and a diabetic of 20+ years I am perfectly capable of looking after my own needs and will order from a menu accordingly. Had I told her that I had diabetes would my ordering have been further policed? The way I was treated was utterly humiliating. Having to share my private medical history with a stranger is absurd and while I can understand wait staff helping to advise about allergens, they absolutely must be trained to not leave people feeling the way that I did today. I could have cried I was that embarrassed. We will not...
Read moreThere were 9 of us booked for a Sunday evening sitting at around 6pm. Overall a lovely place, beautiful building, friendly staff and generally the food is good.
We didn’t have to wait too long for the dishes to come out but they where bringing them out one or two at a time with big gaps in between so by the time we could all start eating alot of the elements on the plate where cold. The greens on the plate came out cold anyway.
They’d ran out of beef roasts and all condiments which is bizarre and bad organisation. If you have a booking made a week in advance you should be able to work out based on averages, past Sundays etc, how much food to prep for a Sunday service so you don’t run out, specially something like beef on a Sunday. 🤷♀️
Me being the only vegan 🙄 I had the nut roast option. Carrot was cooked well with a bite. The greens, kale, cabbage and leek, were cold and raw. I can deal with raw kale and cabbage if they have some heat. But raw leek-cold was not pleasant, like eating a raw onion on a Sunday Roast- it’s jarring to the palate. The hassle-back potato’s, aside from where the knife cuts were placed, were raw and I couldn’t eat them. The gravy seemed bought in but the nut roast did have some nice flavours and was the best part of the dish. I did feel the ratio was way off however, the nut roast was a giant mound and then a small amount vegetables although that’s just my preference, because I love vegetables.
I would definitely return to try their weekday menu and the vegan dessert. Aside from my dish and the greens on everyone’s plate, the food was good for everyone else. It’s got a lovely atmosphere and great drinks selection,...
Read moreMmmm... not sure about this place and yet its popular. My visit is from the perspective of a single elderly man who decided to 'drop in' off the street. I was greeted not with 'hello, 'good afternoon as I would have expected but 'do you have any food allergies which seemed to be the stock phrase of welcome. I wondered perhaps if it was a clinic. I explained that I had come for a meal, where might I sit. The young lady scanned her laptop and pointed to a table next to a public doorway, the table was adjacent to a radiator which was on full blast. I told the waitress it was too hot and was unsure that I wanted public and staff coming and going past as I ate. She had decided to continue a discussion with a noisy male staff member who suggested I should turn the radiator down. I then became invisible as they continued their discussion. So annoying! I moved elsewhere. I found another table near a window overlooking a garden. I was told that a lady with 3 dogs had reserved it (no sign). The waiter moved me about 6ft nearby to a table for six, at last. I ordered Appleby cheese pie with sauce and a tangle of greens which was ok. The menu is varied, a long wine list for those who enjoy wine. The venue is an Old Hall and stylish with a variety of rooms. In the larger rooms any atmosphere is lost. On my visit (Wednesday 2pm) the clientelle was elderley. The prices start around £17 for mains. I had a beer at about a fiver. Plenty of parking, I understand it is busy at the weekend and good for family groups. I won't go again, it's not for me, and indifferent treatment by staff...
