I really do love this place. I've been coming here for years on and off, and it's always a pleasure. The look, feel and ambience of The Crown hasn't changed. Its stayed a village hideaway pub and I'm glad about that. On the summer time, the gardens are full of flowers and fresh Mendip Hills air, and in the winter, the open hearth is often burning. Either way, any seaso , this pub really does deliver the scene you want from a village pub. If you spend a little time here, it really is the kind of place where everybody knows your name. The food here is served as a lunchtime menu, but the pub is open all day and snacks are available. Talking of the food.... I have eaten in a lot of places and this place just seems to hit the spot every time. It simply just isn't average pub food. It's gorgeous. Maybe half of it is the way this place makes you feel. It's just so cosy and friendly. The barlady who served me was very ice and knew everything on tap and in the barrel. Very good lnowledge, I was I.pressed. So there you have it in my opinion, a diamond pub in a...
Read moreA lovely pub in many ways - feels like a dying breed with its rustic rough-around-the-edges charm and great ales and good food. BUT lingering impressions can be left from how a place deals with problems when they inevitably occur (which we all accept). Today we ordered food but were not informed that there was a significant likely delay in when it would come. After 45 minutes I asked at the bar and was THEN told the kitchen was busy and it would be another 10-15 minutes. In the event the food arrived another 25 minutes later (so a 1hr 10 wait in all). Next problem was that soup we had asked for explicitly without optional extra ham (for a vegetarian) arrived covered in ham. Another 10 minutes passed before this was replaced. There was an apology for the soup error but the impression was that our general concerns were not really taken on board, much less reacted to. In many places an outcome like this might have resulted in some money back for example. But not...
Read moreI used to stay at the Crown when I was six years old in the early fifties. Mrs Howe was the landlady in those days and Bill Thatcher used to bring his cider to the pub in flagons as far as I can remember. He was quite old then. I think Mrs Howe`s daughter Mildred took over the running of the Crown after her Mum, and then eventually her Daughter Daphne and husband Bill took it over. I live in Cheshire but called in there recently and had some food and drink. For me it was like stepping back in time to the fifties as the Crown has not really changed a great deal since then. In those days the darts room was on the far left as you went in through the front door. Its a wonderful old pub with history written all over the walls in every room! Lets hope it stays that way. I will certainly be calling in again when down that way in the future to enjoy some more good food and drink ! Laurie Hatchard....
