We've been visiting The Duke of Gloucester for a number of years now and it's definitely become our go to for a quick, easy meal.
The Duke of Gloucester is convenientky situated on a small estate on the outskirts of Crewe which features a Travel Lodge hotel, a small Co-op supermarket, a take away and a petrol station. Across the road is a newly opened Aldi Supermarket.
The venue is large and themed around The Duke of Gloucester steam train which was made at the nearby Crewe Works. There are 3 distinct areas, a function room to the right as you enter the pub, a bar which has seating and the restaurant towards the back. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of room between tables.
Eating out with food intolerances can often be disappointing, however, the staff at The Duke of Gloucester are very knowledgeable about their dishes and are happy to talk to the kitchen to make changes to make a dish safe. The recently started to provide a decent allergens menu which makes it much easier to decide what to have. The menu features pub classics like fish and chips, steaks and lasagna. They offer a very wide range of options for those Gluten Free (fish and chips being an option!) and a decent choice for vegatarians.
We've always been happy with our visits and even more so with recent menu changes! Thoroughly recommend if you have dietary...
Read moreMy inlaws booked a table for 8.15pm for 8 of us for my daughters 24th birthday. A young girl eventually came to take a drinks order. She stood at the end of the table so we all had to shout down what we wanted. It was 9.20 by the time the food came. My daughter ordered the Linguine which came comprising of a bowl of plain pasta, a couple of chunks of brocoli, a few chunks of pepper and a sprinkling of cheese on the top. No sauce or dressing just plain pasta. Hence to say she couldn't eat it. Two of us had the steak at a whopping £16 each. When it came the steak was tiny and no salad as it stated in the menu. We were not given any steak knives either. No one came to take another drinks order so we had to wave someone down. A lady with short hair came and kept clearing the table the second we finished eating. We were not asked if we'd like dessert menus and the lay looked shocked when we asked for them. She brought them out then 10 minutes later we see her with her coat on going home. My mother in law went up to the bar and asked the young lad behind the bar if we could order desserts and he said sorry the kitchen closes at 10pm. You literally get better food and service in Whetherspoons....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFood was great but the waitress explained that they had had 200 covers that day and planned for 80 so had to read off a long list of what they didn't have. Would have been easier to tell us what they did have, or more seriously to work on some printed one off menus as they'd run out of so much - yet kept accepting reservations including from us fairly last minute.
Lack of choice is main reason for lower score, along with lack of attentiveness by the waitresses (probably due to how busy they were). Though can't knock them for job done at the table, nice people and knew what they were talking about.
Atmosphere was also ruined by being seated next to a table of dunks who couldn't stop complaining and shouting - can't blame place for this too much, it distracted from the visit.
Overall a sub-par first visit though you can tell it would normally be a really nice place to go, so I expect to revise review...
