I tried to leave a very detailed review but Google won't allow it. So I'll try my best. In the previous 3 visits we have had mixed experiences. First visit 5 excellent meals. Last night one meal was appalling, the rest were OK. Drinks had issues too. Lemonade was awful and staff admitted they knew about it. The chef has obviously lost their passion for cooking! Despite stating several times that there must not be pepper in the omelette it arrived heaving with it. It's supposed to be a seasoning not a filling. Sent it back a received a very overcooked one back. Omelettes are yellow not dark brown. The chips were the real issue. Absolutely swimming in fat. Very hot fat. One of our party now has a burn from fat shooting out of the chip. Trying to fry a cheap frozen chip more than once doesn't end well. The steak was excellent as was the steak and ale pie. A reasonable tagliatelle was let down by having garlic bread that lacked garlic. The fries caused more problems again when my daughter asked what cheesy chips were so we ordered some but it seems the chef didn't know either! A lump of solidly welded together chips was not what we were expecting. So solid neither myself nor her could remove them from the dish!! They were a brick that came out in a lump after my son had to use quite a bit of force!! Silly issues like sauces simply being thrown on the table, no salt, cutlery with napkins stuck to it don't help. Staff knew we had issues and yet no apology was given. And if a meal or drink is inedible then customers should not have to pay for all of it. I have run pubs and been a pub chef. I get that it's difficult but paying full price for a poor quality meal isn't ok. No apologies was not ok. Staff are lovely but clearly not trained for what to do in case of an issue. I'm absolutely gutted that the meal was awful. It used to be a great place. But thats the third time we've had problems and the last. You lost a much larger bill as we left without desserts or more drinks and we won't be returning. I'd happily leave a much more detailed review if Google...

This used to be our go to pub for years. Used to be good food and a nice play area for kids. We visited a few months ago and the food was OK which was different to what we were used to as it has always been simple but fresh and good quality. We decided yesterday to go again giving them the benefit of doubt. Well, it actually not only got worse but also more expensive. 4 meals and 4 drinks just shy of a £100. I really don't mind paying almost £20 for a good burger if it is actually good. I ordered the Dirty Burger, well the patty was OK, the pulled pork was dry and clearly been made at least the day or two before. The mozzarella sticks that it came with were cheap frozen ones out of a bag and barely warm. The chips were dry and also seemed like they sat under the heat lamp for a while. My partner had their chicken, mushroom and spinach pie which was a poor take on a pie. A tiny piece with 3 small chunks of chicken and literally 1 mushroom, thin gravy and a few chips. My daughters went for the fish with scampi, the Sea Medley or something like that. Now, for £22 a portion I would really expect a good quality pub meal. The fist was just tasteless and the batter was like a wet blanket around the fish and the scampi was some cheap frozen ones. How does a pub manage to mess up one of the simplest and flagship pub meals is beyond me. I tried the fish and so did my partner and we both had to have a few drink after just to help get rid of the taste. A tasteless mushy fish in soggy batter. We promised our daughters some deserts but even they said they didn't want to have any there. We gave it a second chance yesterday but it was awful and we will not be returning. I get it that pubs struggle and have to increase their prices but for around £20 a meal I expect something decent. I'm not asking for Michelin standard but just freshly cooked, decent food. Honestly, go...

despirately disapointing fall from grace. had a meal here 5 weeks ago and that is why I returned. What has gone so wrong. My wife order a curry off the specials board and I ordered Chicken and bacon burger from main menu. The food arrived within 5 minutes of ordering. That should have been the first warning. The popadom on my wifes curry was a cardboard grease boat and the curry a watered down attempt that at best was tastless or simply vile. Being a diabetic who had taken my insulin I was committed to eating my burger and to be fair it was OK. not great and would not order again but managed to consume it. They agreed to offer my wife another meal so in the event she opted for fish and Chipos because no one can get that wrong. Actually it was probably cooked in the over used Oil and the advertised crispy batter was like a greasy j cloth. Totally inedable and swimmining in old oil. My own Friday evening is now ruined. I am watching the TV while my wife is in the bathroom throwing up the little she did manage to consume which gives me time to write this honest review. Despite going out as a couple and having to dine alone while my wife played greasy plates pretending to be food I was still charged for one meal and two drinks which is insulting. I also noticed that the prices have gone up. Gordon Ramsey once quored the quickest was to close down a resturant is to increase prices at the same time as reducing quality. The Fighting Cocks is certainly ticking both of those boxes. Bad news travels fast on the Island. You might be able to cheat the tourists but...

This was a quick decision to pop in here for a late lunch, 2pm ish, the pub wasn’t busy, but wasn’t empty either. We were greeted at the door & told we could sit anywhere we wanted to. There was only the 3 of us but we still chose a table that could have seated 6, but only because there was lots of room & the staff said it was OK. There’s a button on your table to press when you want service, they then come & take your drink & food orders. We ordered drinks, a Guinness, a Coke, and a half bitter shandy, also 1 starter & 3 main courses, the starter was Bubble & Squeak with a poached egg on top, the 3 mains were 6oz burger, rack of ribs & gammon ham. The starter was absolutely delicious, the poached egg perfect & the hollandaise-type sauce beautiful, this option is also available as a main course which comes with ham, I highly recommend this as a starter & I told the staff to please ask the chef to never remove it from the menu! My mum said said her rack of ribs was lovely, tender meat fell right off the bone, sadly, my wife’s 🍔 was overcooked & dry, she was actually annoyed with herself afterwards for not sending it back, so, I make no complaints about it as such because we never raised it as an issue, but, the bun was hard & the burger was very dry indeed. We didn’t stay for coffee or dessert (see my other review of Harvey Browns for that 😉) Will we go back? Yes, definitely, but not for the burger, for the bubble & squeak! 7/10

Overall a good experience but it wasn't great. 4 of us went for lunch yesterday, 3 meals returned to the kitchen ... Seafood linguine - the smell was wrong the minute it was placed on the table I knew it wasn't right l tasted a small bit and it was clear something was off, not good for a seafood dish. I tried using the call button on the table but no one came, so I had to take it up to the bar to complain. I was offered something else, I decided to try the steak and ale pie... AMAZING, best I have ever eaten in my life, delicious meat, delicious pastry and delicious vegetables. Fish pie- tasted ok to start but a few mouthfuls in and a prawn tasted off, a couple of mouthfuls more and it was clear there was something wrong with this too. Staff were told and Nachos were ordered as a replacement, however off prawns had put my partner off and after a couple of nachos he decided not to eat anymore. Leek and potato soup, tasted like water, had no flavour at all and was hugely disappointing to the point it was also returned to the kitchen, brie and cranberry was offered instead (mum has asked about this before ordering the soup) LOVELY! Chicken in Diane sauce was lovely, sister thoroughly enjoyed it. Chocolate fudge cake was great, actually amazing! Staff handled it all so well and were helpful and understanding.

We were driving back to our hotel, and fancied a late lunch. We didn't know very much about the pub and were absolutely stunned at how good it was. It has a decent sized car park, all on the flat, making it suitable for those with mobility issues. A lot of people were outside on the many tables, enjoying the sunshine; but we had been outside all day and wanted a cooler position inside. The staff were very friendly and helpful; and I loved the call bells positioned on the tables, which really does seem to make it easier to serve customers. The menu is really good and there were numerous specials to select from. In the end, I chose the Ploughman's Lunch with the option to have ham, Stilton and Cheddar. The platter was seriously loaded up, with pickles, salad, fruit to add to the ham and cheese. Check the picture; it really was a substantial meal. From what I could see, other meals were easily as great a value. There was an impressive range of drinks, and I'm sure that everyone could find something to their liking. I have to say, it's a pity that the pub is not a bit closer to where I live; I would be going there on a very regular basis. If you are passing by there, please drop by; you will not regret it.
