I am still in a bit of a haze from my experience of spending my 55th birthday in Askrigg, all this due to the love of the BEST BBC show ever created, All Creatures Great and Small, in 1978. We arrived in Askrigg Friday night quite late. The pub was open, but the restaurant was closed. I asked them if they could feed three poor souls, and they said the restaurant was closed so we sat down for a few drinks, and before we knew it, they brought out two big bowls of french fries, some dip, and a basket of fresh bread and local butter. They said that's all they could do, but I was touched by their kindness. What great people! Sunday, I made reservations for lunch. We had the roast beef with all the trimmings (Yorkshire puddings, mashed potatoes, etc). Again, the staff could not be nicer. The sticky toffee pudding was out of this world. I just want to say thank you for your hospitality on my 55th birthday and for being part of a dream long in the making- visiting the Yorkshire Dales! So, if you are looking for good beer, good food, and good people, you found your pub! Another nice detail is that it is right across the Skeldale House, one of the main reasons why I...
Read moreTried the King's Arms on a recommendation on a wet Tuesday afternoon. Went in and was greeted by a lovely lady behind the bar. Straight away we noticed the bar was like an old country hotel, nice atmosphere, clean, friendly and professional. A great start. Ordered drinks and lunch of a mushroom stroganoff and the burger. Food was excellent. It was the head chef who brought the food to the table, she had full make up on and clearly took pride in everything she did. Food was superb, salad varied and very fresh with a home made vinaigrette. The bar lady spotted when my glass was running low and came to the table promptly to ask if we needed refills. Superb service. The music level was as background music should be, low but audible. In summary, a charming place for a meal and a beer, setting was first class and eclectic, service was professional and friendly and the food was superb. Great selection of food and the dinner specials were very...
Read moreBeen going to Askrigg for nearly 30 years and unfortunately the decline in the Kings arms is very noticeable. Can't comment on the food because although it was only 1.30 on Sunday lunchtime and service was not meant to stop until 3pm we were not able to order food. Tables available but a rude person walking into the kitchen said no more food. Nice start to our holiday!!! Whenever we have holidayed in the village that has never been a problem. HPB wrong attitude. Previous family that run the establishment were fantastic and so friendly. We have a lot of holiday history here. Often visiting area up to 3 times a year but this has made us have a rethink..luckily I had some provisions back at accommodation so could feed ourselves. Atmosphere gone completely. Middle house and The Crown further up village much better options....
