Apologies for the late review. We recently saw an advert for this place for New Years Eve, live band and buffet, and it looked interesting. So decided to go check it out and have a drink see if we liked it. Within minutes of having a drink we had booked for new years eve, and already decided to come back for some food one day, as we saw the food coming out from the kitchen and it looked amazing. Anyway on the 2nd visit we literally couldn't chose from the menu as everything sounded really nice, so we decided to get a load of starters and just experience what we could. Wow, this place can cook food. The chef deserves a special mention here as evey single dish was cooked to perfection. Ended up full to the rafters , so decided on the creme brulee and a couple of baileys hot chocolates to settle the stomachs 😂. I cannot recommend this place enough, and we will be going back on our Fridays off for sure. Thanks you for the excellent food, exemplary service and welcoming atmosphere. See you before New Year's Eve

Visited for Sunday lunch. Very friendly staff, promptly took orders for drinks and food. Served in reasonable time. We had the 2 courses for ÂŁ21. Enjoyed the chilli beef starter, very generous portion sizes. The beef was well cooked on the roast main, lamb ok, but most other things on the plate were under seasoned and bland and the Yorkshire pudding quite doughy on the bottom. Roast potatoes were ok, but not crispy at all. The cauliflower cheese was basically just steamed, with cheese melted in top. A decent gravy could have saved the day, but that didn't have much flavour either and was quite gelatinous in consistency. Overall rated good due to staff and ambience, but food was average. I probably won't be back for the Sunday roast, but would be happy visit again during the week to try other things on the main menu.

My first ever visit to Darlington, and after a long drive I couldn’t be happier that I chose The Mowden for me and my family. The food was amazing, the amenities were top notch, and the service was outstanding! A huge thank you to Rachel who served us - you’re a real asset to the company and truly one of a kind. You made us feel so warm and welcome. Thanks again to the whole team!

This pub recently changed ownership and the previous landlords left. We thought we would give the pub a visit after it was reopened but we were disappointed with the results. The menu is more substantive that the previous one but the quality of food certainly isn't as good as it was before. We were given our table and asked if we would like drinks, after ordering they arrived five minutes later, mine was spilt (slightly) over my menu and table area, the waitress apologised but did nothing about it so I used my napkin to clean up. We the waited over twenty minutes before someone came to take our order, then another forty minutes before our food arrived! Parts of our order were missing and we had to ask for them again. The food was bland to say the least, my fajita sauce was not a fajita sauce it was a slightly spiced Italian pasta sauce, my wife's salmon was dry and again the sauce was bland. I understand that new ownership probably means teething problems but this was a couple of weeks after they opened and on a not very busy Monday evening. It's such a shame because we never had a bad meal when the previous landlords were...
