We went for a work away day and had been looking forward to it for months. The table arrangement was nice so we could sit and talk to everyone and we were in the joining room of the Hibiscus which was much quieter than the main café area. The seats were comfortable. I liked the scones as they were still warm when I ate mine. There was a nice selection of cakes and they gave people boxes for whoever wanted to leftovers home. There were a lot leftover. The endless refill of tea was promised but since we were all given large teapots none of us needed a refill. We were there for two hours. We have had afternoon tea at another nearby place on two occasions but this was the first time here. The sandwiches and scones were full sized. I hugely disliked the black sandwiches and given how awful they were I'm really surprised to see them in photos from reviewers as much as a year ago. When I picked up the sandwich a hard lump of it fell off in my hand. I am not sure what the texture is supposed to be like, but it was incredibly dry and too rock hard. The tiny bit of filling did nothing to moisten it. Does anyone think black food is appetising? The second sandwich seemed to be made with thick slices of ginger cake (that's what it tasted like), also very dry. And barely any filling. The third sandwich was an egg mayo on 'normal bread' and we commented on how we'd have just preferred to have them all as normal sandwiches since then at least we'd be able to eat them. There is no point trying to be pretentious if you can't pull it off. They could have been cut smaller so if we would've realised they were disgusting we didn't need to pick up another one. Whereas I had to dump a partially eaten one back on the tray so I could still use my tiny side plate for anything else I might want to try. I had the vegetarian option and had to share the platter with two other people. The meat eaters had something described as a sausage roll which they all seemed to like. Although there were plenty of positives. I hope that if we do afternoon tea again we will go to the...
Read moreI visited here on the 25th of March, I came here after my walk around delapre Abbey doing film photography. While the weather was nice. Being autistic with my lanyard and many badges to say I am autistic & adhd & others. I ordered a latte and ask to look at the menu ( as being autistic I need a visual menu. I opted for the egg sandwich. They asked my name ( I gave them it ). I got my coffee first, and started to sip it while I await my take out sandwich.
While the young lady was pleasant enough. I feel the customer service is lacking and the fact me being autistic and showing my hidden disability lanyard was ignored. Upon this the wait for my sandwich was diabolical. 15 minutes passed and I'm still stood about. While more people came in. At this point I was the only one having a takeout sandwich to what I could see. Also having sensory of hearing the music and the people I could not hear my name being called. I'm still standing wondering is this sandwich lost in the twilight zone. Its 20 mins now. I'm losing hope being adhd my appetite tends to go.. so when I saw a suspicious looking box on the side. Not one member of staff bothered to take notice. I get you have customers to serve. But hello autistic adhd in a sensory hell of noise wanting to eat my damn sandwich I been waiting eons for.. finally a young lady notices my box with my takeout sandwich in and says my name. Well yes I was the only one here waiting for a takeout sandwich. By the time it got to me and I sat out in the grounds my appetite had gone and only ate half a sandwich. From the waiting about to the sensory overload , to being ignored or they had no clue and customer service lost in a black hole of chaos. As for the coffee it taste like burnt beans and had been rushed. Careless coffee , staff having no idea and not taking in ones hidden disabilities and making me wait.. and I wasted £9.15 .
Please improve all the above.
An actually Autistic person who only wanted a egg sandwich and had to wait...
Read moreThe quality of food vs price - not reflective. As a regular customer here I have to say the food appears to have gone down hill - today sadly was the final straw, I ordered a beef and horseradish sandwich - the sandwich didn’t come with a lot of meat to start with but if your getting quality that doesn’t always matter, sadly that was not the case. The meat was fatty and tough I had to pull it apart and ate the bread - I decided to feedback discreetly and asked to speak to the manager, however was met with “ they are too busy can I help “ so I expressed my views on the food discreetly hoping that I would at least be compensated for the joke of a sandwich - the “ too busy manager “ informed the member of staff that as I had eaten half of it they would give me half my money back. So to the busy manager - I would highly recommend that if you have a complaint you deal with the complaint directly as it will be better received and not hide away behind busy - I would also suggest you take full responsibility for the appalling state of the sandwich I was presented with, and compensating “ half “ of someone’s money back when you don’t even have the courage to come and speak to the individual is an absolute joke. Needless to say I will no longer be purchasing meals from your establishment and will make sure that I go on to spread the word far and wide - incredibly disappointing had you of just came and had a chat I feel that this could of been rectified without the need for a bad review and ultimately the loss of my custom. I will be sure to bring my own food when visiting the grounds...
