Whilst staying in York for business purposes I decided to try the Wetherby Whaler and see what all the fuss is about. Only a short walk from the Premier Inn and opted for take out. I decided on Haddock, chips and mushy peas. I did enquire if they leave the skin on (as some places do not skin haddock) and they told me no skin - so that’s a huge plus! Not much of a wait so was pleasantly surprised at the quick turnaround for the food to be ready. First glance at the fish it appeared to be crispy batter and once breaking into it, the fish was really good chunks of meat and not the usual flat and thin you can get at some locations. The batter had a nice taste to it too and was not in the leathery but bland and tasteless. The chips were done to perfection with the right amount of crispness and fluffy softness inside - just what a fish and chip shop should provide. The mushy peas also done to perfection and not fluorescent green to be seen from space. Overall a right nice fish chips and mushy peas dinner! Sorry the photos look half eaten. It’s because I couldn’t wait!

It was my second visit in a little over a month. The first time I came here was with friends and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I decided to bring my family this time and they were as impressed as me as I was on my first visit. My little daughter loved her fish and chips. Ordered three different types of items from the menu which you'd be able to see from the pictures and the receipt. Plenty of parking around which is always a plus. Just had to wait at the door as literally there was no one for nearly 5 minutes to serve us. Anyhow once inside it was all good from the service to the food and the finishing. Definitely worth the price and the quality. I would highly recommend this place and can honestly say it's 10 times better than Thomsons on A64.

Wow, no other words can describe the sheer pleasure of taste perfection or the pop of crispy batter, the chips soft centred and crisp on the outside. The curry sauce had the right spice and consistency, the most amazing taste. The jumbo battered sausage which arrived with great time was fried and cooked to an exceptional quality, and all mixed together. I am ruined for any other chip shop, but will always come back to eat at The Wetherby Whaler. Ps the takeaway for my food was provided and no additional cost, the staff was professional, polite and explained all clearly and concise.

We have fish chips at least once a week from York Wetherby Whaler, we have used it since it was built as they are the best fish & chips in the York.

I'm gluten free they now offer gluten free fish & chips, gluten free sausage, gluten free onion rings cooked in a separate fryer. The cafe offers gluten free bread & butter and a gluten free sponge for pudding.

The Icelandic haddock is fresh daily, skinned, boned by the team, the fillets come in three sizes a regular, a special larger fish, the whaler with one portion of chips feeds me and my partner between us as a take away.

The staff are really friendly and helpful, the support me & my partner due to our mobility issues, when carrying the take away to the car when it is icy and Slippy.

The fish is fried to perfection, my mum comes with us and she has a regular non gluten free haddock or the senior meal in the cafe.

My only wish is that they get a coffee drink machine for the take away to enable hot drinks to be purchased with the take away to eat outside on the tables in summer or the car when it's colder.

My mum & dad came had fish & chips every night in Bradford, in the 1950s, my parents moved to York, my dad Eric for some time ran a fish shop in Tang Hall. So my family have history in fish & chips and we know excellent fish & chips. The Whetherby Whaler is fantastic best fish & chips in York.

The quality is equally fabulous in the Wetherby Whalers in their other venues in West Yorkshire.

I can't ever imagine going elsewhere for fish & chips in York. We have tried the other high quality venues in the city, but we don't find they match the quality and standard of the...

Great meal spoiled by rude waitress Had a nice meal here on a quiet Saturday afternoon (20 July). We were seated to the right near the door and till. My wife went to the bathroom on her way out. I went to the till, which is at the door, paid our bill and went out to the car outside. When my wife came out from the bathroom, she was followed by the waitress who had originally served us shouting ‘Excuse me, excuse me, have you paid your bill?... Excuse me, excuse me, have you paid your bill?’ This was an attention seeking move in front of all other diners who stopped eating and turned to watch the commotion. My wife asked if she had bother to check the till before before accusing people. The waitress retorted with ‘Ill get the manager’. (Who I believe is the woman I paid the bill to assuming that the manager was the one in the black top rather than the red one). We are both n our 50s and do not expect to be treated in this way especially when the waitress had obviously not checked the till first and also had shouted out before even enquiring if my wife was on her way to the till. The waitress made a very public display of accusing my wife of trying to avoid payment so I feel it is only fair to publicly call her out for it and suggest that she is put on training in how better to deal with this sort of thing in future. Hopefully, this public message will also give her the chance to reply and apologise publicly to my wife after she confirms that the bill...

Have eaten from the takeaway side many times. Evening time, during the week the food is great. Friday’s and weekends it’s very busy and the same amount of care simply isn’t put into the food. Tonight my daughter and I decided to eat in the restaurant side... we were second in a queue of three couples. An older, dark haired lady was showing people to their tables. In her spare time she probably turns milk sour just by looking at it! She was incredibly rude to us, telling us to “get back by the door!” Even though we were wearing PPE and was led to believe government guidelines say you should stand 1 m apart. Once ‘back by the door’ she demanded we close the door. We pointed out that we weren’t holding it open, that was the other couple, who were now stood right behind us. “Yes, shut it!” Was her reply. Not once did this employee/rude woman say please. We felt upset and left, warning the people behind us how rude the woman was. They agreed, having heard the entire conversation. We attempted to get food from the takeaway side but couldn’t get served. Left feeling...
