We arrived at 7:30, ordered a bottle of wine which took 30 mins to come and then ordered a cold meat platter with a baguette which took an additional 45mins-1 hour. We didnât say anything because we were having a good time with each other and were chatting away but in any normal dinner situation it would be unacceptable. Another 45/1hour later our mains came, my linguine wasnât fresh and was lukewarm, the prawns were hard and just overall didnât taste nice. My two friends both tried it and agreed it wasnât nice - it wasnât just a case of me not personally liking the tase, it just wasnât cooked well. Then kindly one of the waitresses they came over and took my plate away and I ordered another meal. 20 mins later it came, it was fine but the veg wasnât cooked at all and again my two friends tried it and agreed. This wasn't a case of being fussy as they both enjoyed their meals. By this point they had both finished their mains and I had only just been served mine and at that point I wasnât bothered about eating. We asked for the bill and the manager came to take payment at which point I spoke about our frustrations. After 3 bottles of wine, a starter and mains each the total was still ÂŁ113 which isnât cheap and you would only feel happy paying this money if the meal was up to standard. I felt so awkward complaining as I know we had already received 50% off mains per person due to government scheme but still the service and quality of food was not good enough regardless of this and we felt the manager should know. So I very politely voiced our concerns, still apologising that we felt this way but being very polite about it and he instantly went on the defence, saying we were freeloaders and âwhat do you want for free, do you want another 3 bottles of wine for freeâ and that we should âpay whatever we wantâ and then just walked off. A lovely waitress then came over quite embarrassed by his actions and tried to apologise to which I was even apologetic to her, both me and my friend and have worked in hospitality and know when customers are being difficult and we certainly were not that. The manager came back over again being defensive and saying to pay whatever we want and raising his voice more and more. Despite us trying to reason with him he took umbrage and said we were being personal and rude and that heâd been in the industry 25 years and knows how to cook and that were essentially wrong and just wanted things for free which is not the case whatsoever. We felt really victimised and he handled it completely wrong We would have HAPPILY paid had he have accepted our concerns and been empathetic about it, instead he caused a massive scene and made me us feel like we were complete freeloaders and we just came for a free meal. Only when our friend went up to him personally after he has brought me to tears and name dropped her previous manager at the Golden Retriever, did he feel guilty and in the end asked for no payment (again we were NEVER asking for this) this is not the treatment you expect from a restaurant manager and as a result of this, neither one of us with ever go back and will never recommend this...
Read moreNever been before! Drive past all the time. So, booked up, asking for a quiet seat, due to a member of the party being autistic.
I'll start with the negatives. The table was lovely and next to a cozy fire. There was a private function in the bar area and the staff shut the adjoining doors to keep the loud party noise out.
Then the restaurant filled up with party goers, and to enable them to be seated, whilst we were eating, they moved our table and chairs to make more room.
The manager was charming, but kept touching my wife's back and shoulder when he spoke to her. Thankfully she isn't the autistic one. I do hope he reads this. Autistic people generally find contact by strangers very upsetting. Please don't touch people you don't know.
He was very kind and said he would buy us a drink next time we came.
One of the waitresses was wearing dirty black jodhpurs and looked like she had just come in from a field. She was super nice and efficient though, but let down the professional atmosphere by her appearance.
The positives are the food. Wow. Out of this world. They have a brilliant chef, clearly.
We will go back, it wasn't awful, and I hope my comments come across as constructive and not rude in any way
Maybe we will come on a week night in future...!

Read moreThis afternoon was my first visit to The Yorkshire Rose as I was unable to get a table booking at my usual place.
I was optimistic as the starter I had (Patè) was beautiful. Unfortunately, what let this place down was being served up a cold main course. This had to be sent back to the kitchen. Fair enough, these situations can occur and I wonât let that ruin my experience. The waitress was friendly, tentative and apologised. I was disappointed with the main course in respect of meat quality- I found it to be more gristle than meat.
I find it most frustrating when an eating establishment charges a â10% discretionary service chargeâ. Personally I believe that you are paying âserviceâ when you pay to eat an item on the menu. You may be thinking âwhy donât you ask for it to be removed when itâs discretionaryâ. Normally I would but in this occasion the waitress saved the meal.
Would I return again? Possibly... yes. I may give this place another go on a separate day to see if that makes any difference to my...
